I have a '79 with a 300i6, it has it's problems, as soon as I can I will put a 460 into it, but I have some questions that need to be cleared, how do I go about changing the mounts for the bigger engine? I know that the only thing i will really need to change is the length of the oil pressure wire. Also what is this fly wheel buisness, i know that 460 fly wheels are like extinct so, if i went and bought a standard 460 from a pick your part location, could i just drop it in if i have the right mounts and bell housing? Any info would be greatly apreciated.
thanks
It's best to get the 3 pc mounts from a donor truck with the 460 in it already.
You said Flywheel . I assume it's manual tranny then.
If it was an C6 ,you will need a 429/460 torque to make the swap.
You will also need 460 exhaust manifolds.
The key to an in-expensive and carefree swap is the Complete
donor truck.
Someone has got to write a tech article covering exactly what needs to happen when someone wants to put a 429/460 into a 67-79 Fseries, I'd be glad to do it, because I've gone from a 460 to a 302, then back again.
But for now you need to get the 3 piece mount/mount supports from a ' 67-' 79 that HAD a 429 or 460, these WILL bolt right in in place of your I6 supports (no additional drilling required)
You will need a C6 automatic from a 400/429/460 application (if you're running an automatic, along with the proper flywheel & torque converter)you will need a properly balanced flywheel for a manual transmission, plus complete clutch setup, including linkage if you are running a manual transmission, you will need to get TRUCK exhaust manafolds if your 460 is coming from a Ford car.
Your transmission mount itself will probably work, as mine did going from a C6 to a C4 automatic.
You will need to get all accessory brackets on/for the 460 that you will need to run such as PS, & a/c, alt, as nothing from your I6 will help.
you will need to get a larger radiator to cool the 460, the lengthening of wires is the least of your worries.
If we/I can be of further help, please ask!
Good Luck, Rick
Cy,
Where are you getting all your parts from? Wouldn't it be easier to buy a ford truck with a 460? Technically, you'll have to buy a truck with a 460 to do the swap. If you don't own a junkyard right now, you will buy the time you finish this project. Buy what you want. The only thing better than a ford truck is two ford trucks. I've got a couple and I lov'em. I think I'll buy some more, soon. One with a 300 and one with a 460. I wonder if my neighbors will love them.
Good Luck, Have Fun,
KingFisher
man I live in a small town in British Columbia CANADA, I can't throw a rock with out hitting one of these trucks, there is a PICK'your'Part like 15 minutes from my house and they have tones of them, it is a little bit of a different story up here, than Florida, and for the nebours liking them, my nebour builds 70-79 ford street trucks, so hey he'd probably like it.
