If you have a LMC book all that decoding info is in the front of it. If you do not have one post your VIN and truck year model here and I'll do it for you. Hope this helps
Thanks AnOldDog, but it still doesn,t tell me what engine came in the car. I do have an LMC book somewhere charles jones. I will try to find it. Thanks to both of you for your responses. Gene
What is the vehicle (since cars and trucks are different in VINs) and what is the VIN. Some folks have that knowledge in their heads readily available to tap (not me though....)
To better explain my position: I have access to a 68 Mercury! I am interested in obtaining a 428 engine. How can I tell by the VIN, What engine came in the car? It could either be a number of different hp 390's or it could be a 428. What should I look for in the VIN no. to know whether 390 or 428?
The 5th digit in the VIN is the engine code. For the 1968 Merc full size, 390-4V is a Z, 410-4V is an M and the 428-4V is a Q. The Mid-size Merc codes are 390GT is an S, 428CJ is a Q and the 428CJ is an R while the 427-4V is a W.
