2002 550 Eclipse Hauler--On long runs trans temp (oil) creeps to 230 at which point I let it cool down for next leg. Often in 75 degree weather this can take 4hrs. This condition just developed when traveling with out a tow. Recently had trans flushed, Coolant system Flushed and synthetic trans oil replaced. Any info would be appreciated. Dfbi
Kind of sounds like you have a plugged up cooler, or line from when they flushed it or, worse case scenario, the tyranny is slipping and the rest of that story would be bad.
Your transmission temp should run about 75 degrees above the ambient temperature.
Are you sure that they replaced the fluid with the approved stuff?
There's a TSB on that, but I can't find it. The in-radiator stock cooler is no good and can't be flushed. Using the stock cooler with me new trans would have violated it's warranty.
Had two trannys replaced on my 01 but it took them on the second one to figure out they had to replace the cooler. I would get it fixed quick. Heat is the number one killer for an auto. I do believe its the air to oil cooler and not the in radiator one. Atleast thats what they replaced on mine.
Technical Service Bullitin. The oil/water cooler is prone to clogging and cannot be effectively flushed. If you get the truck fixxed by a stealership they SHOULD abandon the in-radiator cooler and replace the aux cooler with one more than big enough to do the job.
The 4r100 is a stout unit. But there's weak points that Ford should have addressed but choose not to. Heat is death to your tranny. A good aftermarket cooler can be a pain to mount but well worth it. Mine runs about 60-65* above ambiant.
The T/C is weak, tends to slip a little making more heat. Billit 3-clutch converter is another wise investment.
Shifts are slow and lazy, making more heat.Clutches and heavy duty bands can also be added to reduce slipping there. Sonnax and Tricumulator mods are a must, good firm shift but not harsh. Electronic shift pressure enhancements are not good for fluid related parts and pump, but maybe better than nothing I don't know. Have you searched arround the traay forum?
Thanx again. Truck is at the Ford Dealership as we speak. I did find out about the Trans Cooler By Pass and they are checking it out. I do tow in OD as the truck has 4:88 gearing and I am turning 2600 RPM at 70 MPH with no down shifting or hunting. Overheating problem showed up traveling without a load (truck weighs 10,000+ empty). My next step is to call Jasper and price their Monster Box Trans as I plan to keep the truck and do some cross country Hauling. I tow a 36 Travel Supreme which Has a gross WT approching 20,000. With this package it appears that the stock Trans is not going to cut the Mustard. Any other options would be Appreciated DFBI
Evidently there was some kind of corp. issue between jasper and factorytech. now FT makes the monster, and jasper makes a class 2 race transmission. the jasper has all the internals of the FT, minus the valve body mods.
IMO if i had to do it over again, jasper class 2 and add sonnax and tricumulator since they don't make the monster anymore. deal them down.
