I have a '77 f-150 automatic I want to put a 4spd in it but I have to know what I need and I am having troubles finding out anything about the truck. I can't find the size of my engine I think it is either a 360 or 400. We bought a Chilton book for the truck. And when we were trying to find the size through the vin number the book said we should have like, 16 numbers and letters, and the vin only has 11... so? If anyone can help that would be great. Thank you!
360/390 has the intake manifold extending under the valve covers, 351M/400 has the timing cover cast into the front of the block instead of a removeable cover, 429/460 are huge and have an aluminum timing cover, 302/351w I don't think were used in that truck in that year but I could be wrong and someone will correct me if so.
The easiest way would be to find a nearly complete parts truck and take everything off that particular truck so you know you have everything. Good luck with the swap, hope it turns out well.
Do you think a 4spd from a '76 with a 360 would work? And do you know anything about the vin number?
Not enough info to tell. 360 is part of the FE Ford engine family. They have a unique bell housing and will not swap trans with other engine families. FE's were not available in F-100 thru F-350s after 1976. If your engine is stock, it isn't a 360, althoug a 360 could have been swapped in later.
The vin is F14SRY49479. The Chilton book says prior to '81 the vin should have 13 digits and letters. And beginning in '81 17 digits and letters. And the engine identification tag is not all there some of it got ripped off
Will the VIN tell you what tranny is in the truck. I found a 76 F250 with a 360 AT. I'd like to know what tranny is in it. Thanks
It should be a C6.
I am in the process of swapping out a C6 AT for a NP435 Manual transmission as we speak, in a 1976 F250 4x4 390. I should have it done this sunday. Pretty much you just need to figure out what parts a truck with a 4spd came with that yours didnt, and get them. You'll need a flywheel ( NOT a flexplate), a transmission and bellhousing, a clutch and pressure plate assembly, throwout bearing, clutch alignment tool, pedal assemblys, equalizer bar and mounts to the block and frame, clutch fork, and you may need a different transfer case or adapter (im not sure on your truck, mine is a divorced transfer case.) There are some other parts you will need that are will be different than mine since you have a different motor and transfer case setup, im sure somebody will chime in and let you know. It would also be nice to get a manual transmission steering column, so you dont have a useless shifter on your column. A new floorpan/trans hump cover would be needed too, unless you want to hack up your original one. Good luck on the swap.
Thanks! A couple of folks have said it could be a C4. do you know the main difference between the C4 and C6?
My plan is to pull the 359MD and the 3sp, and swap a 360 (or 390 or 428) with a C6 in the 56 F100. Its just going to be a stock, weekend Homedepot bomber for my wife. I understand the C6 is somewhat stronger than the C4 that some say my be attached to the 76 2wd F250 I'm looking at as a donor truck.
