I think he's referring to the Check Engine Light. Other vehicle manufacturers refer to it as the "Malfunction Indicator Light", or MIL. On Fords, it's a CEL.

OK, your Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) as FORD calls it in their manuals.
It took me a while to come up with what they were talking about when they call it CEL, maybe a non-FORD name.
It is comes on with the other indicators and shares a common 10A fuse in the on position before you start the engine. Do the others come on? If so check the Lamp, if not check the fuse.
They check the bulb here in NC on all OBD-II vehicles. There's no sniffer test, so all the computer stuff has to be working correctly, including the check engine light. Taking it to another testing location isn't going to do any good. Everything with OBD-II is on the computer and is linked by VIN, so there's no getting around passing the test. Nothing **** about that. They just stopped sniffer testing pre-OBD-II vehicles, but even when they did, they never checked for codes or check engine light or anything. As long as it passed the sniffer at idle, they didn't care.
It just seems like a nitpicky thing to fail it because the bulb's out. But if they're not doing a sniffer test at all, then I guess they need some measure to make sure it's running clean.
In CA, they put every vehicle on a dyno. Garages here spent millions of dollars because every smog shop needs a dyno.
96 and newer get hooked up to comp older still uses a dyno. thanks i will check the bulb ,but the check engine light passed with engine on thats why i didnt think it was the bulb. and yes mo is a f--ked up state. thanks again i will post if the bulb does the trick
