A friend gave me a new steering column for my 81 F150 however, no key. Does anyone know how to get the key/tumbler assy. out of the column without ruining it? (the column)
thanks
dan
IF it is an XLT model then there is a little hole just under the key/tumbler assembly put an allen key or something of similar size in and push and you should be able to pull the key/tumbler assembly out. I hope this helps.
Hello, CFM is right but you may have to remove the wheel and the top part of the turn signal swithch to access the little screw that releases the tumbler.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Jun-02 AT 09:10 AM (EST)]I tried to get the key lock out of the column by sticking an allen key in the hole but it still won't come out. Am I missing something else? does the tumbler have to turn forward or backwards too? I can't do that cause I dont have a key, do I need to drill out the center of the lock and take it out in pieces? does this screw up the column?
thanks
dan
I think sticking something in that little hole only works in the ON position; without a key, you can't get there. You may have to remove the whole assembly -- or see if a locksmith can make a key using his little feeling tools. (I don't know what they are called)
either drill out the center until all the pins fall out or get a good locksmith to make a key....there was only a certain number of blanks fo he should be able to find it easily. I had a set of blanks for that back when I repoed cars in order to be able to drive them to the storage lot. Hope this helps
before i came back into the army i was a ford tech. i remember diong a few ignitions while there. granted it was seven years snce working there my memory may be clouded by too much beer.
i do recall having to use a chisel to knock off the outside of the lock cylinder(the part that you actually grasp to turn the key)
then you will have to drill through the center of the lock cylinder. it is a pain in the a** but it beats junking the coulum. your best bet is to go to your local dealership and talking to a tech(bypassing the service writers and service managers) most techs would be willing to look the exact procedure and explaining it to you.
