I was wondering how hard is it to change a transmission if you've never done anything like this. How long will it take? how many people does it take? It is a putting a 4-speed into a 78 f-250 and taking the auto out. If you have any sugestions on what could make the job please tell me

 

Andy of the two ways to go, you have picked the hard one. It can be done but you will need a lot of parts that is not on your truck now. If you aren't very handy, I suggest leaving the auto in.

sounds to me like your synchros went out in the tranny. Happened to me twice.

 

it can be done. but it does take some time.
took 75 f-100 2wheel 360 auto. and swaped 400 4 speed in to it. runs like scaled ape.
need to do alot of parts shopping. need all the clutch asembaly,
from the clutch pedal right on down to the clutch equalizer bar.
the f-100 had all holes pre drilled under the dash for pedal. as for floor this was per stamped so cut then drill holes. basicly you will need every thing from the standard trany. encluding the trany cross member. as i found out they look the same but are different. as for time it took me awhile for i had no help. hope this helps. good luck.

Don't let my good friend John discourage you. A manual swap is probably easier from the standpoint that there seems to be many manual trucks out there. What John didn't say is that he recommends you get a donor truck which has what you need. This way you get all the little goodies that could take forever and a day to find, to say nothing about the cost to buy stuff piece meal.

As for as the number of people, this is a tough one. I'd recommend at least 3 people; one to gopher stuff and the other to help you lift and hold that tranny. Also, and perhaps more critical at times, you should have at least one 6 pack of your favorite legal beverage. I personally recommend that you not consume any until after the project is complete. However, be advised that "help" has often been known to abandon a project to consume the six pack, so you may not get any. Good luck on this project. :-)
