I need advice on side trim for my '96 F150. The truck and trim are red. I cleaned it up this weekend and the truck looks great but the side trim is horrible. Some of the side trim has started to fade/turn pink and looks bad. Sort of scaly in spots. The passenger side door & front bed molding look the worst. This side catches all the sun. I've tried cleaning it but it doesn't help. I see that NPD has the trim pieces but they are all black and need painting. Will paint stick to rubber? How could I match it? I did a search on here and saw in a post that they are still available from Ford, but pricey. Anybody know the part numbers for red? Thanks.
Dunno any part numbers. Why don't you like the black? Many of these trucks had the trim either color matched or not, they all look good I think. I don't even have side trim, but I'd like to.
I couldn't find the link at Stylin Concepts. All of the trim isn't bad. Just three pieces are the worst. When I get a chance I may check the dealer just to see how much they are. The dealer is about an hour away and I was just checking other options. I really like the matched red trim, so I guess the dealer is the only option. Thanks.
You may or may not wish to take the trim off, if you do want to remove it here is what I have done:
Most of the Trim is two sided sticky taped on. With the aid of a heat gun or hair drier the trim will come off pretty easy. I have used mineral spirts to clean the rest of the adhesive off the trim and paint.
To re-color the trim there are several dyes out there made for bumpers & trim. Have to find one that matches for you and apply accordingly. Don't have a brand that I would recomend. But they are not paint it is a dye.
After cleaning and recoloring, time to reinstall. Since my wife & I do custom upholstery on the side I have used commercial grade fabric & foam spray glue directly on the back of the trim and it has worked, regular two side sticky tape from the craft or hardware store would probably work but it is rather expensive and thicker than the OEM stuff and white instead of gray. Do not know how much the OEM stuff cost, chances are your local "Custom Parts" shop will have something that will work good to.
If you are looking to make a change in the center chrome strip to contrast or hi lite, buy the most expensive electrical tape you can get, (about $3 a roll for 50' at Lowes Made by 3M or Scotch) They have about 6 colors to choose from and is simple to install, if your center strip width is less than the tape just work it in and trim with a sharp knife or straight edge. To give you an idea of how it might look view my gallery, both stripes are just yellow electrical tape. And yes the stuff is very durable, A guy at a marina turnned me on to this and I have been using it on boats & cars for 15 years.
