I bought some tools from our Snap~on guy (two ago)! He refused to take cash, and didn't want to be bothered with taking a check (at the time I didn't have or even want a credit card, not enough income, to justify it). Three months after he left, Snap~on came in wanting "their" money, and couldn't prove anything was bought and by who (no signatures or contracts). I paid what I owed, but told them in no uncertain terms, that if it weren't for the shop account, I would have told them to stuff it.
I buy a lot from Napa, their ultra pro series is top notch. Some Sears, Some canadian tire. Princess auto for the seldom used/don't want to spend a fortune on tool. Only on a few occasions have I bought from SnapOn, I don't really believe in spending that much for any tool(especially when I don't believe that they're any better) but a couple of specialty tools I could't find anywhere else and I just gave in.
Being a repair professional I have a different outlook on tools. For the average diy, crapman tools are fine. I still have some craftsman screwdrivers and sockets from when I started. I even have a ratchet or two for backup.
Being a professional I have learned that tools made by snap-on and the other dealers are stronger and therefore more durable. Tools that can take the torture of my daily use are a must for me. Of the big three dealers,Mac, Matco, and Snap-on, I have no preferance. Each have tools that are good quality and can withstand the abuse of being owned by me.
Tools I won't buy. Sorry gents, anything I have ever seen from harbor freight is crap in the hand tool area. Anything stamped made in china , taiwan, singapore, or indonesia , etc. get the same seal of dissaproval from me. These tools lack the integrity and stregnth to be considered much more than a paperweight.
Good quality tools are not cheap. If you plan on using them on a regular basis spend the cash wisely on tools that will serve their purpose and you well. No one needs a box of broken paperweights.
This is just my view on hand tools.
Air tools are simple for me. If it isnt stamped IR, I don't buy it.
captchas & cheapranger, A tool company is only as good as it's dealer. In my area 10 years ago you could not find a Snap-on truck, but my you could set your watch by the Mac guy. Since then snappy has gotten their act together and my mac guy retired 2 weeks ago, I really don't hold much hope of a new Mac rep in the near future and the new Matco guy was supposed to start stopping. So I guess as long as I owe snappy money he will be by. Greg

Good luck, I walked on the local Snap-On truck and picked up about $200 worth of tools and handed him my business card. I figured as long as I owed him money he would come by. Still had to chase him down 3 months later to pay off the debt. I now buy all of my tools from the parts store at least I know where I can get the broken ones exchanged.
this snap=off dealer and the new york sales office all can shove it were the sun has no light. i had 15 men in the dealer ship .he would go next door to infinity but not 100 feet away to us. took off with about 500$ of my stuff. and countless k's from other ships.
our mac man you could tell time by. if he did not have he would be back the next day with it. when i purchased my new scanner he said heres mac's it's 1.000 $ heres otc's they make it for mac and it's 200 $ cheaper. mac calls it taskmaster, otc calls it nemisys, mac even uses the very same update chips from otc.
tools will be tools but to me snapoffs grade is way off. i have some from the 1960's and some months old that are worn out already. it's how you use them and for what.
nothern tools i have a lot of their items . use them to custom make when i need to have something odd.
