Ok - here's a question that has been rolling around in my head since my new tailgate was stolen after being on the truck for 2 f'n weeks.
Is there a way to add a lock actuator to the tailgate that will lock and unlock with the doors? I've never had a tailgate apart and hope that someone has done this. I'm already tired of locking and unlocking it manually. But I'm sure my insurance will balk at buying another (raise my rates)
Does anyone want to guess what a new tailgate costs with paint and hardware? Luckily I only had to pay my deductable.
Thanks - that is exactly what I'm looking for. Now I just need to see if I can find it cheaper. I'm not tight - I'm frugal
With a little searching I found it $20 cheaper. Thanks again for your help. I guess I could have searched for the lock in the first place....
Well don't be frugal with the deal, tell us where you found it cheaper.

If your good at metal fabbing you could make one. These aren't like the one's in your door that move a lock rod to lock and unlock. So wouldn't be able to simply attach the actuator to a rod. This thing uses a solid bar that extends out and prevents your handle from being lifted. It doesn't actually unlock and lock the OEM key lock. You leave the key lock in the unlocked position.
these do use the same common actuators found in universal lock setups. but instead of pulling or pushing a lock rod these push and pull a bar to jam the handle from opening. these little units are easy to make. i have made a few. you just need the actuator , a sheet shear and a bender.
i bought the tgate lock and just copied it. simple setup. however if you really tried hard you could defeat the system. the tgate uses 18ga steel i used 14ga cold roll in mine, much stronger that way.
Ford390- I'm going to guess you actually enjoy building these kinds of things. It was having the bender that gave it away. Well that and the "simple setup" remark. People that do things often always say it's simple. Well I don't fall for that anymore. Of course it's simple when you've done it a hundred times before. But for me and the sake of my finger's not getting smashed, I'll just pay for it. Electrical work, OK. Installing something that's already been built for me, no sweat. But metal fabrication work, not for me.
yeah i love building these kind of things. even built me a giant can crusher with a 25 ton cat earth mover hydraulic cylinder. it will take 400 cans and make a nice 1'' thick pancake out of them. oh yeah good times.
Ford390, do you say these jam tha handle so that it won't work? I have a key lock in the handle on mine. Maybe I can mod it to just activate the lock. What do you think?
If you really wanted to you could just buy an actuator and mount it inside the tailgate to move the plastic piece that turning the key would normally move, to lock and unlock the tailgate. It would require some creative bending of a rod in a weird sort of "U" shape to attach to the actuator and that plastic piece, and fitting the actuator in at that angle would be a tight squeeze, but it could be done. But you can't rig the actuator to turn the lock cylinder itself. The lock cylinder will only move when the tumblers inside the cylinder are lined-up, and for that you need the key. The way the Pop & Lock works, is in my opinion, a more secure method than the OEM lock, or installing an actuator to move the plastic piece. Even if someone were to push in, or yank out, your lock cylinder they still wouldn't be able to open the tailgate with the Pop & Lock installed. Take your tailgate apart and have a peek inside and you'll see what I mean. You'll also see the piece of metal that the handle pushes down on releasing both ends of the tailgate allowing it to open. This is the metal piece that the Pop & Lock prevents from moving to secure the tailgate.

Not sure which actuators you are all using, but the one I installed actually locks the lock inside the tailgate. It is a 2001 SD, standard Ford keylock tailgate. I can lock the doors and tailgate withe the alarm, and unlock the tailgate with the key, or lock the tailgate with the key, and unlock with the alarm key-fob. The one pictured in the link above is the same brand and it looks just like the one I installed. Maybe I am misunderstanding the description of how it is being explained.
Actually KenReb's right. I had mistaken my Pace Edwards one for a Pop & Lock. I think the Pop & Lock ones do move the plastic lock piece. It doesn't actually move the lock cylinder, it just moves the plastic piece that turning the lock cylinder would move. So you would be able to use the key. While mine simply moves a rod to block the handle and you can't use the key. Whoops.
Here's a picture of the actual Pop & Lock for the SD: PL8250
It's nothing like mine.
