i have a 1977 f250 2wd with the rear tank (single). the problem is that when the tank is empty it shows the level at the 1/4 mark. i have tested the gauge and it does do a complete sweep of the gauges range, Empty-Full. i would rather be able to fix my existing sending unit as opposed to buying a new one. i priced at ford for around a $100 bucks. thanks for any help.

You knock a ring loose that holds the sending unit and turn the unit until (if your tank is mty)the gage is on empty. Then put the locking ring back on. The trick is to put it back on without turning the sending unit at the same time. You should'nt have to un-hook any wiring. It's not that difficult. Also be careful not to rupture the gasket.
I don't suppose you are getting high readings on your oil pressure and temp gauges. I had my truck run out of gas on it's test drive from lot showing 1/4 of gas on gauge. The oil and water showed well above normal. The fix was that a voltage regulator that is attached to the back side of the instrument cluster was bad and needed replacing.
all my other gages work fine, except the oil pressure gage is disconnected and an aftermaket one is under the dash for now. thinking of putting a "T" fitting in and using both gages. but yes all my other gages read properly.
