happy new yaer,
i have a 1985 ford f150 with a 4.9,300 inline six and my camshaft broke at the third lobe. ive got the first part out, but how do i take the other 3/4 of the camshaft out ...........................
Right back to you on Happy New Year!
Sorry on cam. Not sure what you want to do here. Engine needs a good look at, miles, oil use, power. When cam broke, both pieces rub each other grinding metal, also did excessive wear cause cam to break?
I would really think on what I have and money to spend on this. If truck is worth it, Rebuild or remanufactured engine or bail out and find another truck. If you rebuild, I would put new cam bearings in after having block checked, machine shop will have no problem on removing cam if you are unable to still get out after teardown. Lifters out you should be able to get prybar down bores to get cam started. Be careful not to mar lifter bores.
Good luck and lets us know what you do.
Looking in help and cant find right now the proper way to have this moved to proper forum. But it will probably get picked up and moved. There is a 300 six forum and best post there.
Look in my gallery to see what a broken cam can do. I would replace everything except the head.
Chris I just looked at your gallery. My guess is that your engine blowing up was probably due to a head gasket leak. That fine looking emulsion of oil and coolant probably led to bearing failure which led to............ etc. The camshaft was probably collateral damage.
Rebuild or replace the engine, those are just about your only options. The cam can be removed from the rear once the engine's out of the truck, pop the expansion plug out of the block and work it out that way. I've done it a couple of times.
As a rule Cams don't normally break in the 300, more likely something went drastically wrong somewhere else first.
