You know how when it's getting late and you go get a light to work anyhow and your self is saying "turn in tomorrow is another day" but no you go get the light !!! So I'm installing the tee's for the dual oil pressure read/temp gauge setup... The oil pressure goes fine, then I get to the temp tee and realize it's not going to screw in with the dizzy in place.. do I stop? Oh No!!
So I proceed to remove the dizzy and it's rather difficult ..finally works free I'm lifting it out when I notice a rod sticking out and freak out!! I go to grasp it and sure enough sloop! Ting thump...(roll) Oh yah !!! I'm feeling great now!!! Well I guess it will make for an eventfull Saturday I'm hoping a magnet will grab it from the drain on the pan and set it in place after...The grunge on the dizzy matched the rest of the story from the past work on valve covers and oil pump work... not pretty..but hey I guess it's a chance to tidy up some..AAARRRGGGG!!!!!!
if it just fell completly into the pan, screw it and leave it there. go get another . also the tee idea only works on the oil pressure NOT the water temp.
I have a moly super performance must have pump drive in the pan after the end snapped for over 190K miles. It passed between the pump and windage tray that'll keep it downstairs. The pan is a 391.

I had this happen on my 351 and was able to get it w/ the magnet after some fishing.....good luck. (if the normal style pen magnet doesn't work find a more powerful magnet w/ some fishing line tied to it....but make sure its tied really well so you don't end up w/ two foreign objects in there haha)
A telescoping type magnet holder with a 1/4" magnet will get by the lower dizzy support and alot of determination you "might" get it out.

I'm planning to drain the oil and go through the drain hole to retrieve it. I'm sure it's setting right there. Maybe not but hey thats when the fun starts right ? I think I'll leave the oils in the bowl until it's all in place again LOL
Well low and behold through the dizzy seat was the way to go. It was standing up much to my surprise. Extend a magnet lifted it through the center and put it right in place. Getting the shaft and magnet to separate without pulling it out of position was a bit tricky. But she done..
I dont understand the Autometer guage reading 50+ oil pressure while the stock reads 30-32...
I guess the only way to set up the stock temp gauge is to drill and tap at the thermostat ?
Next time use a piece of clear thin wall vinyl tube, press it on he end just enough to hold its weight (shaft) securely, install then pull up slightly as you twist it. Don't pull any higher than the amount the shaft engages into the pump, with oil in the system the drive will have resistance to pull off the tube.

Hey guys I"m getting ready to put a rebuilt long block in my truck.
I don't understand all this about the dizzy and the oil pump shaft... I took my dizzy off and there is a shaft on it with a gear at the bottom, is that OK?
What does the part that comes off and falls down inside the engine, look like? How does it just fall down, I don't get it, what holds it there normally? Anyone got diagrams?
You guys are scaring me, I'll probably put the dizzy on the engine while it's on the engine stand, with the oil pan off In case....

If you pulled the dist. out and the long shaft stayed in, that is good, but if you are rebuilding the engine don't worry, you should put ina new one when you put in your new oil pump. The shaft runs from the dist. to the oil pump is about 9" long and is hexagon shaped.
