I.m am wanting to rig up a F550 with a 2-4yd dump box for my landscape supply service. I have located a 2004 F550 V10 4X4 auto with 42000 kms (25000 miles)
The truck will be used for deliveries in a small town with a 10-15 mile radius. I would estimate that the truck will log 10,000-15,000 miles a year.
Hoping someone may be using a similar truck in their application. Wonder if the V10 would be a good choice or diesel. Is the 2004 automatic tough and reliable?
Hi, I just bought 1 myself for local car deliveries.I am 95% shure of my decsion so far.The trucks being built as we speak. What I can tell you is that my good friend is a mechanic for a large construction company in so cal. They have 25 F450's w/ v10"s. with 100 to 176K miles on them and he LOVES them (he's also a hardcore chevy guy) he tells me the guys can't kill them and I know they try.He used to have a fleet of 3500HD's and they got beat down quick! I tnk at only 15K a year diesels are WAY out of line pricewise and, unless its a 7.3, durability wise. The v10's don't make monster power but they get the job done nicely, and because they don't make as much torque I think there easier on the auto transmissions.Ill let everyone know how it works out in the end.
Thanks for the input. I just got back from looking at it (about 75 miles away). Looks really good, didn't commmit, may lose it for a couple other guys were coming to look at it. Kinda wish I saw your reply before I left. What year is the one you are rigging up? Thanks a good point about the lesser torque easier on the tran. The lease guys here in B.C. Can. have stated that one has to put 40,000 miles a year on to make a new diesel truly make sense or a need for heavy long pulling. Our diesel prices have really jumped in the last year. I have had F-450 7.3 dumper five years ago, had it nine years, great truck. Switched to a crew cab GMC pickup 454 Banks etc. (for family) now need a dumper. sure liked the quiet gas engine etc but prefer the super duties
I'll think on it over nite (probably not much sleep) if it is still there we'll see. I wasn/t able to hear it run or drive it because his wife left with the keys . I was a little ticked. It is still on warranty so that shouldn't be too much of a concern.
Thanks again for your input and sorry for this long winded reply
god dam it...i had a thorough reply but something happened to it, so long story short
the 04 v10 (mike has 99 with less power) that is still under warranty is definately the best way to go and if "i have guys lining up to buy this truck" doesnt pan out and it is still available i would get
As posted earlier, mine is a 99 with a little less Hp and Tq but I had 2 earlier model 450's w/ 460 EFI's and they ran fine.I really do like diesels ( still have 2 650's w/5.9 cummins and a 97 7500 w/3116 cat) but in light duty applications I'm betting the gas will be ok.The only limitation of gas I think is in 85 to 100% loaded full time work.Even my trucks spend 50% of their time empty and with the fuel trends being what they are (45 cents less today), the HUGE premium for a used truck w/ little or no remaining warranty makes less sense to buy a diesel. If your buying new its even worse, 34K for a new 550 with a small frame, brakes, trans, ect. when you can get a 650 w/ a real diesel and an allison trans and air brakes, air suspension w/ the same XLT cab for 40K (also comes w/a 2yr unlimited mile warranty on motor and 3 yr unlimited on trans!) If ford felt that comfortable with the 6.0 they would offer the same coverage in my mind.Sorry for the long reply but I feel for your decision personally.Bregards,Mike.
