Hello everyone, just wanted to make a contribution since I've gleaned a substantial amount of info from the forum. My truck is a 2001 SD EC 4X4 PSD.
First off, let me say that when installed, this kit is definitely worth the effort. However, there were a number of things that could have made the project substantially easier. I would have been better served to ignore the sequence in which the directions suggest to complete the installation, as I believe you can do a majority of the assembly on the bench and just drop the box/tube combo in.
First hint, make sure that the large end of the plastic tube/horn actually fits into the hole in the large metal base/surround. There was no way this was going to happen without modification. I ground down the plastic casting remnants on the end of the tube and the powder coating from the inside lip of the surround. Even after doing this, let me tell ya, it was a TIGHT fit!!
Second hint, when you see that the plastic horn will go into the metal base, check to see if the mounting holes actually line up!! Mine were off by quite a bit (which I found to be very surprising) and resulted in having to undo my progress to take the parts out (for the second time) in order to make 3 of the holes bigger and make a new hole that was about 1/4 inch from the factory hole!! (didn't want to do the drilling with it in the engine bay)
Third hint, and I think this may only apply to certain years of trucks (again, mine's an 01), the air temp sensor that must be reinstalled in the box along with a grommet is too large for the hole and accompanying grommet as is. I took the route of carefully grinding down the two tabs on the body of the sensor, and while this does work, it is probably not the best way. I still put a couple drops of silicon on the sensor to make sure it doesn't part ways with the grommet unnecessarily .
If these three items are addressed/verified to not be a problem, then you should have a pretty easy time with the rest of it. Enjoy!!!
I will be going with the AFE stage II soon myself. The 6637 sounds like a good mod that is cheap and effective. I would just rather have an actual cold air intake.
Luckily I didn't pay nearly that much for the kit, but I absolutely agree that the kit was a bit lacking when it came to the items described. I would have at least expected the holes to line up!! CNC...what's that?? LOL
I just got done doing mine, and ran into the same problem with the air temp sensor at the back of the box. That was a real pain in the butt. That and now there is big hole in the bottom of the air box with a grommet that i didnt need, that kinda stinks. Overall a good kit though. Max boost went from 19.8 to 23.9 on my edge attitude, egt temps were down to the low to mid 600s cruising on the highway at 65mph without a trailer, outside air was about 40 degrees F. So far so good. Cant wait to pull something to see how that works.
do you think that your getting that high because of the tuner you have versus my edge, or do you have something else going on there, i.e. bigger turbo, wastegate mod? Im asking because I dont know if im really in love with this egde stuff yet.
Somewhat in part due to the tuner. I feel the biggest contributor is the fact that I have disabled the wastegate, tightened up the tension rod on the actuator. Then went through and MADE SURE that there were no boost leaks anywhere. Removed the Y-pipe from the engine, (easier than it looks). Cleaned up, degreased all the boost tubes, boots, etc and then reinstalled all, making sure that all clamps were straight and tight. Installed the Wicked Wheel so no stalling. And of course that Napa 6637 air filter and Dieselperformanceparts 5" exhaust. All of that plays a part.
gotcha. I have the 4 inch straight from the turbo back, that may help a little. The previous owner of this truck didnt clean the engine much, so I assume the maint on it was lacking also. I bet I could find a few boost leaks, etc. I love the new intake, it makes a cool noise if your really pulling boost and you let off the gas real quick, kinda like a cat saying ouch if you can imagine. So far so good......next upgrade is a turbo. Also, when i was installing the intake today, I noticed a lot of oil residue junk in the intake on the pipe going down to the turbo, is that normal, or is the blowby from the turbo. I think the turbo has seen better days.....

It's the crankcase ventilation: Do a search for "CCV Mod".
Also if you don't plan on big injectors, than a Wicked Wheel is a great investment for the money. It's about $80.00 at today's prices and the install is pretty easy if you like working on your truck. Johnny8 did an excellent writeup and it's in his gallery.
But I'm beginning to realize here that I'm highjacking a thread and I'm a moderator.
"HIGHJACKING" the thread is when you post something that is off the topic that the thread is supposed to be about... it happens all the time, and i am probably the worst offender in this forum..! usually the "MODERATORS" know better, but kwik is sooooo full of information that sometimes it just leaks out..! we all give him lots of slack though because if you have a question, mr. kwik is usually right here to answer it for you... lots of guys like that one here, but he is one of the guys that tops the list..!
Redsundevil, I just installed my stage II also. At first I saw the same problem you described. I couldn't believe the tube would not fit in the hole. Trick is, you have to install the tube small end first through the hole starting from the inside of the air box and pushing through toward the turbo. Worked great and all lined up.
