i hate big brother as much as anyone.
to my knowledge, not all cars on the road have em, a good cross section do. i have never personally heard of them being used in litigation, only speculated...... i have been in the collision repair industry for 15 years, and i have never seen said "black box"... nor have i had a manufacturer, or annyone else ask for one to be removed.
Just Wondered If The 2005/6.0 Have The Black Box That Records Speed, braking, ect During A Accident? IF SO WHERE IS IT LOCATED?
It's my understanding that if a vehicle has such provisions, it's part of the main computer- this stuff is tracked the same as shift points, mileage, engine hours, etc. Just passing on what I've heard several times............also heard it's usually activated by a "preconditioning" signal to/from the air bag. Certain conditions cause a "pre-arming' of the air bag controller - rapid acceleration/deceleration, etc.
The RCM, Restraints Control Module, is located on the center tunnel under the instrument panel behind a cover. Communications is through the DLC, data link connector, over the truck's network.
It can create and store DTC's related to the restraint system (seat belts and air bags) for diagnostics, failures, etc. It can also store vehicle crash data.
Frankly I had no idea where it was till you asked; but I just looked this information up in my online subscription service manual at motorcraftservice.com
IIRC there is also reference to it storing crash data in your owners manual. I do know of law enforcement getting the proper authorization and securing information from these devices in fatality crashes in my city.
Here is a picture of the module in question and the corresponding pinout of the main harness connector. This module communicates over ISO Bus (9141) which is accessible with most network passthru devices. I will not go into details of this for reasons that don't even need to be stated, but data can be manipulated and/or destroyed...the memory is not protected in any form or fashion.
