I'm in the middle of a frame off restoration/modifications, that is going smooth with only one minor holdup. after I pulled the engine/tranny/t-case, the clutch arm (the one one that clips into the bellhousing and the throwout bearing) wasn't working. come to find out, the throwout bearing was toasted (the clutch is still good) i had a new throwout bearing overnighted in, reinstalled with the new bellhousing, but the clutch still doesn't seem to be working right. the haynes manual shows some sort of square piece that looks to be behind the throwout bearing. my truck didn't have that when i took everything apart. when i push on the linkage to try to work the clutch, i get a little bit of movement, but it seems to be jamming against the bellhousing. has anyone else had this problem? do i need to get that little square plate? its an '83 f-150 with a 4 speed, 300-6, and four wheel drive. i'd like to fix it while the rest of the body is out for paint, but i don't know what else to try.
I'm not sure what your clutch fork pivots on, but I have seen them stretch at the pivot point or at the fork where the throwout bearing sets. I would take a close look
at it.
I believe that square piece your refering to is the retainer that the clutch fork connects the through-out bearing to the fork. The through-out bearing is pressed onto it, it inturn slips over the fork. You then slip the trans input shaft through it and into the clutch plate.
Be sure to align the clutch plate up with the pilot bearing B-4 you tighten up the pressure plate. You can buy a plastic spline from your local parts store for your clutch disk for about $8-10, they're well worth it.
Good Luck, Howard
my clutch and pressure plate are good to go, its that connector plate that worries me. the clutch fork pivots on a ball in some sort of spring setup on the fork. that square plate is gone. the clutch fork was slipped onto the throwout bearing, the fork slipped around the outside of the bearing, could it be that with the bearing i would have enough travel to activate the clutch? the clutch is aligned, the bearing and fork are good, the pivot is set, and i still can't get it to work right. does anyone know where i can get one of the connector plates?
