I just changed the front brakes on my 98, expected the ABS light to quit coming on under acceleration. It does not come on as often now, but still occasionally comes on. What gives. The rear pads are worn, but not to indicators yet. Should I add a little fluid to see if this fixes it or should I look deeper?
Brakes work like a charm. I'll never buy cheapo pads again, I don't care if they warranty them till I'm pushing up daisies!
Wagner Thermoquiet pads! Totally quiet and NO dust!
To correctly diagnose the ABS system, you need the trouble codes. Otherwise, you can only guess.
Do you have 4 wheel ABS (front wheels have sensors, if so)? If you do, you will have to use an ABS-capable OBD-II scanner to pull those codes. These scanners are not cheap and will be found only in better-equipped shops or in the dealerships.
If you have rear-only ABS, you can pull the codes easily.
You're right about the Wagner TQs! They're a great product!
I had the same problem with ABS light coming on from acceleration, I also changed my front pads and finally tried the speed switch on the rear axle housing(pumpkin) and that fixed it, just over 2 weeks now and no ABS light and I know it works as it rained the other night and can feel it engage when needed.
See a previous post of mine for the Ford Part number, only available at dealer for about $18.
Note, you cannot get ABS codes unless the light is on while you are scanning.
Found my previous post, this is an easy fix, hope it works for you:

My 98 4 x 2 Expy always had the ABS light come on since buying it 2 years ago, if the light did not come on right away from pulling away from the house it would come on after a ratcheting stop.
I had read about changing a sensor on the rear axle housing, I finally picked one up this week and put in it, AMAZING-It Worked
This sensor is on the top of the rear axle housing (pumpkin) and angled a little forward inbetween 2 bosses (metal humps)
So Happy
Ford Part #F85Z-2L373-AC, your pn may be different but all ABS Expies have them
Hey Big Craig - Thanks for that info. I have a 98 Expo and the abs light has been driving me nuts for quite a while. i know the anti lock brakes work but the light still appears on occasion. Did you have to put it on a lift to get at it? What did that part run, as it probably is a ford dealer item.
There is no need to drop the spare, just back it onto a curb or up car ramps and it is right there, not a great idea to mess with spare retention cable unless you really need to.
