I just programed my 00 7.3 PSD Ex with an older model Hypertech programer. I went with level 1 (lowest) and firmer shifts. The first thing I noticed was turbo whine. It went from vetually none to noticible, but not anoying. Is that typical?
Do you have an exhaust? I am new to diesels but not turbos, and I have noticed you can hear the turbo quite well on some PSDs that have exhausts. Some you can even hear at idle! That said, is it louder or higher pitched. I would have someone that knows turbos to listen to it to make sure just incase, but it will be allowed to spin faster since you added boost with the chip. Not knowing enough about the engine and not being able to hear it myself I can only help you so much. Good luck finding out, I hope it isn't the turbo thats going. Though... that just gives you a reason to get a bigger/more efficient one

Its bone stock...I assume its just the extra boost, but wanted a warm fuzzy from someone else who also noticed a whine.
Well,
it is a turbo... so its going to wine! But sometimes when a turbo is blown, or about to blow it wines more than usual. That is what I'm trying to get at. I would have someone listen to it if you know anyone that would know what to listen for. Its cheap insurance! I'm not trying to scare you, its probably just the added boost, but I also don't want to say its ok and then you end up with oil shooting out the back end and no boost. ie blown turbo.
The turbo whine on my '03 6.0 was much more noticeable after I installed the Airaid intake. I haven't done a chip yet, but I would assume that any change in airflow (chip or otherwise) would change the pitch of the turbo. You might still want to have it checked though.
How much to Turbo's cost. I know it seems pointless for my '00 XLT 5.4L it being to lowest model but I love my car and i'm going to try to hook up it nice.
Did you solve your turbo whine mystery? In a recent post, you mentioned you were running a 5W30 oil, AGAINST the recommended 15W40!
I decided it was just a little axtra boost. I switch the programs around and the whine changed accordingly. FWIW, this was before I switched oils. And not to go off topic but the manual "allows" 30 weight up 90 deg ambient...thats 30 weight dino cg-4/SH.

Just a little shocked that a mechanical engineer as yourself would ask such a question!!! Obviously you would need a HUGE number of "RESOURCES"
to design and build your "OWN" truck!!!
Well, he did admit he was "new to diesels"! That would explain why he is using a 5W30 oil in a diesel!!!!!
Bob, please don't decend into personal attacks. If you have a technically sound point to discuss, please present it.
My question on this above was how noticable and to what degree people noticed the change in turbo whine when changing programs...not that I was surprised that it would change.
Lets take the oil discussion back to the proper forum.
