Ok folks I'm thinking of upgrading from my BD75 chip and I'm looking into a multi stage chip. What I can't figure out is what does the tow safe stage on a chip do for you when towing?
I think I've heard of "tow safe" referring to tuners, more than chips - but reguardless - it's basically just a lower horsepower tune, that, like FireRooster said, keeps your EGT's, and tranny temps for that matter, safer than towing on a high HP, race tune.
in the world of diesels, more power is only going to be made by adding more fuel. this in turn adds more air to the mix because there is more exhaust spinning through the turbo. more fuel= more heat, more heat= unsafe for towing. the "tow-safe" is usually 45-60 hp over stock, usually power settings 1 and 2. leave 3 for light towing, and 4 and 5 for unloaded "power-trips." the lower settings are also less stressful on the transmission, especially when it is trying to pull more weight.
since you have a chip already, i am assuming you have gauges to monitor temperatures and boost. when towing, you do not want to see over 1250* pre-turbo temperatures. sustain anything more and you're asking for trouble.
Thanks for the info guy's. I have guages, and a 75hp chip in right now and when towing my 8,000lb TT up the hills in Colorado I can move up the passes around 50 mph while only pulling about 1100* EGT's per turbo.
Would I see any lower temps with a chip that has a tow safe mode?
most likely. but you wouldn't have the extra 20-35 horsepower you have now. there is a 40hp "heavy tow" setting, and a 60hp "regular/light tow" setting. i would opt for the 60hp since your temps are pretty good as it is.
what brand chip are you thinking of? i recommend DP tuner, im getting one.
If you're seeing 1100 towing up a pass - I don't see a problem with that. You can run a PSD at 1200* all day long - so 1100 is pretty good considering the load you have behind you. You could drop egt's with a lower program, but then you're loosing pulling power too. Personally, I tow in whatever program gives me acceptable egt's for the load I am pulling.

Right now I have a Bully Dog 75hp chip, and she works fine, but I'm not sure I get the whole 75hp after reading some past threads. I have been hearing great things about Jodi's chips, and that is what I was looking at. I still might I just might but not add a tow safe mode and just go with some thing like 80hp max and watch my gauges.
PS how come the mods on my truck don'y show in my post like your's? I have them listed in my Sig, and the box is checked.
