Is there some kind of nuteral safety switch in the column that will kill my starter? I just tried to repair a sloppy column and I removed all of the wireing. I cut the harness at the wheel and plan to replace it. When I tried to re-start, no start. Is there a way to start it temporally by spliceing until I can get a new harness. I have a Haynes with wireing diagrams, but I'm no electrical engineer.

I'm alittle confused. Are you replacing the wiring harness or is there a mechanical problem with the column. I would connect all of the wires you cut back together if you haven't already for starters. Your nuetral safety switch is located on top of the coluumn not far off the floor. The easy way to find it is to start at the floor and run your hand up on top of the column until you find it. What could have happened is the pointer that operates the switch may have popped off and is not triggering the switch. If you see a small metal pointer on the floor of your truck you found your problem, but as far as splicing those wire together I think you are opening a can of worms it would be easier probably just to reconnect the cut wires.

Is there something in the column harness that when cut will kill the starter?

TC, With your harness still in place on the truck, it is looking for the connection needed to be able to start the truck in park or netural. I will take a guess here, but you might be able to find the two wires and connect them together to start the truck, the drawback is the truck would start in gear. That seems to be a problem for some of our guys here, but both of my trucks will start with the gear selector in in any position. I have started the truck in gear and now always remember to make sure of where the selector is before turning the key.
Not much help today, huh?
