ok...i have a 78 bronco with a 429 and edelbrock carb....when i first try to start it, it doesn't want to idle...i have to rev it around 1500-2000 rpm about 7 or 8 times before it will even think about trying to hold an idle...if i try to hold it at 1500ish, it drops to about 1000, then to about 500, then dies.....so when i do get it to idle, i put it in reverse and it wants to die....drive is ok...so it warms up and i am driving somewhere, and come to a light....it idles around 750 and after a half to full minute, it starts hesitating....i have to hold the brake and gas at about 900 to be smooth and not die....this is before and after i just adjusted the choke cuz it wouldn't even start if it was too cold...and it has new cap and rotor...one thing i was thinking is the engine being worn out (a quart of oil every 75 miles BURNED)...but my compression numbers are between 125 and 145 on all cylinders...and it has new plugs....
sounds to me like the motor needs more fuel at idle. fuel filter or fuel pump, vaccume leaks?
when i put my edelbrock 750 on my 429 it took alot of tuning to make it happy, i had to go with the .23 accelerator pump, bigger rods and smaller jets, a high volume fuel pump, and make it a little rich at idle.
realy old bad gas will make it idle wierd too, you know the haunting smell....
pull the top off the carb and see if its gummed up inside from bad gas or years of use.
hope this helps
