Check your voltage and fuel pump relays. They are on the passenger side under hood on fender.Take them out and shake them.See if there broken up inside.
If they were bad would the vehicle run? Or would they cause problems like the ones mentioned above? Sounds interesting.
dunnno. with my vehicle, If I keep my foot on the throttle, it will not die completely. Kinda sounds like it has to "cough" once to wake up, like a smoker does to see if he is alive in the morning....
I whould think if the motor is running and the fuel pump relay is bad it might be turning on and off the fuel pump. The vibration from the motor might be shaking it up inside.Think of it as a light bulb gone bad. Some times if you shake a light bulb it will come back on if you make the connection inside the bulb.Look for other shakie electrical stuff.Do you hear the fuel pump on the fuel tank come on?Fuel pressure regulator?Looks like you put a lot of time into this van.Sounds like fuel problem.
I replaced the Fuel Pressure regulator and the inline fuel pump. They made no difference. If I turn the ignition to the on position I can hear the pump pressurize. Keying it on and off makes no difference.
When I disconnected the vacuum line to the FP Regulator and blocked the vacuum it starts and stays running the first time no stalling. Which still has me thinking????????
I have come from starting and stalling, then running for about 45 seconds and stalling again, then surging, and lacking power. To this: Now it starts, stalls once and runs fine. Considering all the work I've done, I consider it an improvement, although my perfectionist nature leads me to wanting it perfect (lol). I will certainly look into the relays.
I would think if the FP relay is turning on and off when running I would notice it when driving. Once its warm and running its now perfect. I have beaten the vacuum leak detection to death. There aren't any!
Thanks for the suggestion! If this van wasn't in such fine shape, and my favorite vehicle it would have long been gone!

my 1987 e150 is just as yours frank,i start it and it wants to run fine for a little while ,and then sudenlly catch a very high idle, also when i drive it at 30 to 40 mph i can let my foot off of the gas and it will stay running @ 30 to 40 mph on its own no gas by my foot?? it has me baffled as i have replaced many parts to this van also and decided that as long as its running better then it was before ,stalling surging,.sometimes it will have a high idle and sometimes it will go back to its correct idle.something is making this van run @ high idle and then back to correct idle.i have to brake at red lights and the van will shift down and try to surge on me as i am comming to a stop.does any 1 have any ideas where i can look into this.thanks
does any 1 have a diagram of all the vacuum lines for this 1987 van? it would be appreciated ,i am thinking that i may have to change them all out ,as the van is old but newer parts were installed in this van.does any 1 know what size the vacuum lines are that are at the passenger side of the van? all help is appreciated.
I'd start with getting the codes from the computer and fixing any indicated problems.
Hopefully, it will indicate the idle solenoid. If not, the great vacumn leak hunt might be in order.

It's in all the books, I think there's one under the hood.
You can't get the hard plastic vac line Ford used stock on these, nor do you need to. The nipples that those lines mate up with are normal size (sorry don't have the diameter). Just buy a whole roll.
Actually I found the hard plastic lines that weren't exposed to the heat of the passenger exhaust manifold were just dandy and I let them be.
Don't forget the vac reservoir canister behind the starting battery. It's thin steel and rusts right out.

My problem/problems were a little different, I had the surge at idle but never a very high idle, and never when driving. As others mentioned check for codes first, then I would clean the IAC, and make sure the TPS is working properly. Then check for the dreaded vacuum leak/leaks. Surprisingly all my vacuum lines were in good shape but I did change a few that were near high heat areas.

My van did something similar to this. It turned out to be sticking throttle linkage. There's a bunch of odd linkage of questionable complication that goes between the cable and throttle valve on my 5.0 EFI. I took it apart, cleaned everything up with emery clotch and some light lube. It's been fine since. Well, except for the throttle cable popping off from time to time... but that's another issue...
i just found out that my air box was not properly bolted into place and was allowing extra air into the air intake which was causing a big vacuum leak,i went to home depot and bolted it down corectly and now no more hiis or vacuum leak in this area.van is running much much better,it may be that when i replaced the air box from the 1 in the junk yard the bolts were a lil diffrent then my origional 1's,thus causing the vacuum leak from the air box, just thought id pass this along to the group,as to tighten down your air box fully to not allow extra air into your intake.the van has a better idle now but stil has a lil bit ofA HIGH IDLE when warmed up a bit.that willbe the next thing to tackle.hope this helps out some 1!!!!
I think the EGR valve. Funny part is I tested it several times and different ways, and it came up ok. Then one day I sprayed the back of it with carb cleaner and it idled up. It wasn't doing that when I tested it previously that way, so I changed it out and its fine now!
