I have a '95 Ranger that I think might have a short circuit in the "Speedometer/Gem" fused cicuit (fuse number 25). With the key off and the doors closed and the lights off (including the under-hood light) the current draw from the battery is 180mA: 160mA from the "Speedometer/Gem" circuit and 20mA from the radio circuit. I found this by pulling fuses while watching the meter.
The problem is that I don't know if 160mA is too much current for the GEM when the key is off. Does anyone know what this should be? Is anyone willing to measure the current through fuse #25 when the key is off. Does anybody know if 180mA is a short or is that just what the GEM pulls? Seems high to me, but I'm looking for other input before I go dash diving!
Also, my Haynes manual doesn't seem to have thing in it about the GEM. Any hints as to where I might find the bugger?
The gem in my 96 is behind the radio to the right., on the firewall.. Off the top of my head.... I can't help you as far as current draw, but i believe the gem shuts off after a certain time, like ten or so minute, to prevent a dead battery if you left a door ajar or such...
I don't have any access to wiring diagrams, but I think the gen is active all the time. One of its functions is the receiver that runs the door locks from the fob. You may not have door locks, but there are several things it controles. Don't know the current drain, but it should have some, but not much. If you battery is running down I would look else where.

It was a bad battery. I bought a DieHard Weather Handler last March and it was bad. I took it to the local Sears Car Center just a few hours ago. They put a load on the battery and it dropped to 4.5v. The "quick charge" device reported "Replace Battery" after about 180s of testing. The battery was under warranty so I left with a new battery.
As for the current draw: 180mA works out to be 4.32AH per day. A think a good car battery is around 200AH. That would give me around 46 days of battery life without a charge. Thanks for the posts on looking elsewhere.
