I have a 2002 Expedition XLT Sport, 4x4, 5.4L. Today, when I went to start her, she won't turn over. The starter solenoid is "clunking", but the starter isn't turning. The battery is fine and has plenty of juice. I have tried the following things with no success:
1. Tried "smacking" the solenoid with the wooded end of a hammer
2. Tried "smacking" the starter with the same wood end of a hammer
3. Tried my spare key, thinking the chip inside my main key went bad
4. Disconnected & reconnected the plug at the transmission position switch
5. Checked the starting circuit fuses and all are fine
All the connections are tight at the battery, starter solenoil and at the starter. She ran fine Wednesday. Haven't had her runniung since then, though. Am hoping this is a simple fix, as it will be hard lugging all the Christmas presents all over the place in my car tomorrow. Anyone shed some light on this or possibly point me in the right direction? Thanks!
I figured it out! My guess is that about a month ago when I had the passenger side exhaust manifold replaced under warranty, the mechanic(s) didn't fully tighten the nut on the starter (+) terminal and it was just a matter of time before it rattled loose enough to lose contact. I cleaned the terminal up, reinstalled the wire & nut and, Bingo, she fired right up. Now, Santa can deliver all his presents in one trip instead of multiple trips!
