I was wondering and suppose we might see these vehicles coming from the storm damaged south. Here is a link to what the vehicles should have branded to the titles. Buyer beware as always on a used vehicle.
I've always heard that you can take a salvage title get it registered a time or two in differant states and the salvage is lost from the title. Then it looks like a clean title unless you have the vin# ran for problems. I do not know if this is true or not but have been told for years.
Friend of mine has a roll back odometer from Canada via Indiana/Ohio and who knows where else. It is possible and no way to be traced. it is illegal, just try to prove who/where the actual fraud was done.
That is really good info to have, though, hopefully fraud won't be a massive problem this time around. I live in Louisiana and have a very good friend that owns a salvage yard. He said that not many of those vehicles are hitting the market because several insurance companies are not releasing them to salvage yards. In an effort to protect against fraud, many companies have declared that any vehicle with water that reached the level of the floorboards be declared a total loss regardles of its repair ability, and then the vehicle is subsequently crushed. He took me to a yard in Baton Rouge that had over a thousand late model vehicles waiting for their turn in the crusher. The only vehicles that are really hitting the resale market are ones where the owner had only the minimum liability coverage, or where they were corporately owned under self insurance policy. I also know of a couple salvage yard owners and a car lot owner who got locked up for not disclosing flood damaged vehicles/parts. It all of the bad stuff that went down in this area, it is good to know that someone is at least looking out for everyone.
