Hopefully Monsta won't give me too hard of a time for not throwing this up in the SD forum but I know some of you, whom I'm hoping will reply, don't go up there anymore. But I'll try and keep it V10 related.
Anyways, so the other night I was pulling out of a parking lot and dumped the throttle. Even with 3.73's and 37" tires, my truck will still spin 'em (ok ok I cheated a bit, I was turning). So the right rear rips to life and I take off. I noticed a strange groan at the same time the tire was spinning but didn't think anything of it at the time. Now, prepare yourself for this scenario, it's an aunt's-uncle's-friends' dog sort of relation here, but from a dead stop, under hard acceleration and when I'm driving uphill (usually under a slight turn only), a rapid succession of clunks is coming from the drivetrain. It literally feels like it's under my seat. I don't know if I ripped some splines or teeth off of something or if I trashed the L/S unit (seems to still be functioning) but it's causing me some concern. It's going to be in the 40's here this weekend (much warmer than 9 a couple days ago) so I plan on crawling under the truck and pulling the driveshaft off and checking it out. I know the obvious would be to pull the cover off the rear diff so I might do that too. Anything else you guys can think of that I should check?
Oh, and to keep this V10 related, I think the power of the mighty 10 might've finally overcome my drivetrain. Oh and for those of you who might've remembered me mentioning a block heater for my truck, my local dealership sold me a unit for a diesel, MORONS.... I'm just going to wait until spring when it's warmer out, one winter won't kill me.
I have that same problem with my 99 V10 SD. The dealer that I talked to said its in the limited slip diff. There is an additive that can be put in the diff oil that is soppose to stop that. I have the stuff but am waiting for warmer weather to put it in. Hope it works and it does it more in a turn at slow speed.-Bill
Time to pull the cover off the pumpkin and take a look I'd say. Stinks, but I'm inclined to agree with the gear teeth being the problem. HOPE THATS NOT WHAT YOU FIND!!!
Well, we won't know anything until you pull the rear cover. But because of the statement above I'm leaning towards the LS unit's clutches. Seems to me if it was a tooth or two you'd always feel it.
I had this same noise on a chevy half ton with LS. Still under warranty, so the dealer did the searching. Found a cracked gear. Didnt actually come apart or have teeth fall off, just cracked. SOMTHING TO LOOK FOR!
(It was a spider gear, not the ring)
Brother, this sucks! I JUST got rid of my 3.73's and the LS from my gear swap. Hell, I'da given 'em to ya.
Maybe one of the other folks stills has their gear sets or LS from a swap.
(sigh)... that's how it always works right? Oh well. Anyways, I just went out and pulled the plug and it had some junk on it, no major chunks or teeth or anything so I don't know if that's good or bad. I took some pics and threw 'em in the misc. gallery but they're all fuzzy. It looked like it was built up over time because it was packed in the plug pretty good, then had a slight "fuzz" on the end of it. So what now, pull the cover?
It sounds to me that its the LS making noise, you can put the additive in it to make it stop but that also makes the LS less effective and harder to get it to engage. After a long hard pull my DRW will do it for a while but it will stop after about 100 miles or so. I just leave it that way so it will engage little easier when I need it.
If it's just fuzz, that is probably just wear on the clutch pack.
Jack up on tire and turn it. If you tore up any teeth on the spiders or side gears you'll be able to feel it. Also, if it you can spin one tire too easily, the clutches may be toast.
If you don't feel anything there, then I'd pull the cover.
