I have a 1999 F-150 Flareside
4.6L Windsor 250,000 miles Engine is drinking the 20-50w oil, 3qts/tank of gas.
Seeking a lesser used motor for the truck. My wife says sell the truck but the truck is paid for and after my last wreck the whole truck looks brand new again. Still starts daily Had the truck since Jan 2001 @ 32,000 miles. Only other problem I have had (3) rearends replaced under warranty and after warranty ran out rebuilt (2) other times. Rearend is due for another overhaul(grinds & vibrates around corners) & Vibrates at speeds over 60mph.
4.6's are hard to find, what with the oil journal problems on the early ones. I'd say you've got a great motor now, so rebuild it. I'm wondering why you're going through rear ends so fast? Drag racing it?

Reason: spelling
Nope, Not racing it I Primarily use the truck as a daily driver & on the weekends I use it as a work truck for doing Landscaping, Hauling a 24' flatbead car trailer and a mustang atop, or Pulling a loaded 12' enclosed trailer for the BoyScouts.
I shelled out my first rearend at 39,000 miles pulling my car trailer with a 1965 chevy pu on it. I ended up having to load the ford on the trailer and pulled it home with the 65 chevy. After the Third time the Dealer would no longer work on that rearend said I was over using my truck. Said I should have bought the F-250 super duty to do what I do. Which didn't make sense to me because my Dodge Dakota 1998 did the same stuff No problem just had weaker springs.
Smoke, Yes mostly just in the mornings until the Engine warms up then really not noticable. PCV valve recently replaced at last oil change/tuneup. Fouling out the plugs every 9,000-10,000 miles
with fouled plugs then the enigne is done. you could buy some time and use a real thick oil like 50wt or 60wt and a can or 2 of engine restore. it is not a fix but will slow consumption a lot.
Yep,
Since 200,000 miles I have been adding engine resore every oil change. Just recently I changed over to also using it with 20-50w oil. was using 10w30.
Have you looked at salvaged? I see a few complete 4.6L engines with low miles for $1900.00 including shipping to my zip (Bay Area). Try the link below:

I'm still thinkin' about the diff. Have you thought about putting a 250 or 350 diff in it?
btw, you could rebuild the bottom end (no head work) for under 1k I'll bet. As far as I'm concerned, a good motor is a good motor, and 250k of diff breaking towing is a good motor.
For $4k, I'd be looking for a fleet surplus truck. This way, you know the maintenance, and you get a replacement vehicle for the money, instead of just a rebuilt engine. I got a steal on mine for $2200.
