I didn't see this posted anywhere. If I missed it, please feel free to delete. Just want to get this information out there for those that may not get the letter due to a move or the dealer having the incorrect mailing address.
I just received a safety recall notice from Continental Tire regarding the ContiTrac TR installed on the 2005-2006 F150 and 2006 F250/F350. The letter is non-descript as to the actual problem but it states that tires made in the 22 and 23 week of 2005 may not meet the endurance test requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 119. If you have the affected tires you have until June 15, 2006 to get them inspected and replaced, if they fall within the suspect mfg time frame. Replacement, including mounting and balancing will be free of charge until then but must be done by a Ford dealer service department. After June 15, 2006 they will be replaced on a pro-rated basis. If you want to inspect your tires yourself, you can look at the DOT serial numbers in the sidewall of the tire (the complete DOT code is located on the inside sidewall near the rim bead of the tire). The following information applies:
Tire Name: Continental ContiTrac TR
Size: LT275/70R18 125/122S OWL
DOT Serial Numbers: P515 1V3W 2205 or P515 1V3W 2305
Tire Name: Continental ContiTrac TR
Size: LT275/70R18 125/122S BSW
DOT Serial Numbers: P515 1V3B 2205 or P515 1V3B 2305
Tire Name: General Grabber TR
Size: LT245/70R17 114/110S BSW
DOT Serial Numbers: P5P8 46LB 2205 or P5P8 46LB 2305
This recall also applies to the spare tire. Fortunately the DOT serial number on the spare in my truck is on the side facing down and could be inspected without lowering the tire. The letter also states that if you notice excessive vibration, bulging in the tread area, or uneven tread wear that you should immediately contact you nearest Ford dealership for further instructions.
I have an early 2006 F250 (drove it off the lot Sep 1, 2005). Unfortunately, all my tires, including spare, are in the suspect lot. I'm currently not having any problems with my tires but I guess I'll be getting some new tires in the near future.
Yeah, I got the letter today. On the letter it says that if you already replaced the tires they will re-imburse you for the cost of tires and mounting...
I'm curious about the specifics of that... Did there have to be a failure of tires that you replaced? What if you replaced them with aftermarket tires of another sort? Would they re-imburse your all or part of the cost of that?
This maybe the reason why so many new F250/F350 truck owners are having severe front vibration. Ill be buying a 06 F250 5.4l Auto 4x4 and will be asking about the tires on that truck. Thanks PowerStroke!
Sandjunkie: The last four digits of the DOT serial number are the manufacture date of the tire and are located on the inner sidewall of the tire. You'll have to go under the truck to see the complete DOT serial number. The number you saw is from the outer sidewall. The full number will be in the same area near the rim bead but on the inner sidewall. Also, I got the information from the letter I received from Continental Tire. There's no mention of a website in the letter.
Upon further research, you can go to Continental's website at www.continentaltire.com. Once there, click on 'Customer Care' on the left side of the screen. Then, type 'Safety Recall' in the Keyword Search box. This should get you some more information.

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately my tires are not affected by the recall. I was hoping to leverage for a new set of something other than the Conti's. I will be looking for the ProComp Extreme AT's once the money tree in the back yard recovers from all the pruning lately.
