Hi! I'm new to this forum, but it has been a great help already. I just bought a 1966 f250 with a 352 2v and what I believe is a 2speed auto trans. The rear end ratio seems to be high, maybe a 2.70 ratio. I'm at the point of putting some money in it, or just selling the way it is...I'm wondering what to expect in way of gas mileage. If I keep it, I'll replace the carb and intake manifold and maybe headers to help, but the wife (who was upset that I bought it) would make me sell it if it only gets 10-12 mpg...I searched this forum, but I got back too much info and nothing to help me. Can you guys/gals help? Thanks! Jon
2.70s in a F250? had the rear been changed out to a five lug nine inch? in lieu of the eight lug dana 60?
352 2V with the stock cruse-o- matic is good for about 5 miles per gallon to 15 miles per gallon and thats with a 2.70 gear set...
352 are not noted for fuel efficecy... However i personally followed a 352 3 speed equiped stock truck for 2000 miles and he got decent mileage of over 18 to a gallon.
Yes, it has the 5-lug. Oh, and it is 2wd, which should help. Can I justify keeping this truck with the wife. 5 MPG, would not do it...I would think it would do better????????
My last little trip down the freeway with some town miles registered 15.5 mpg.
It has the original 352 with some mods. 4v Holley 600 cfm Duraspark electronic ignition headers and 3" stainless steel exhaust I also bumped up my gears in the rearend to 3.00 from the old 3.50. It also has the original granny four speed manual tranny.
I am going to be working on the tuneing a bit more to see if I can do better.
Important note: Keeping your foot out of the secondaries helps alot.
You might have to pull up your pants and tighten your belt, and let the little wife make a choice. There are plenty of wemmins out there but good ol trucks are scarce. If she don't like your truck getting 10 mpg, drive her down to the Ford dealer and show a couple of them $40,000.00 trucks that have big payments and get 18 mpg.

Heh-heh, that would be me.
You sure it's an F250? That would have 8 lug wheels, though it could have been changed. Your door tag info can be used to decipher what your truck should have.
I average 15 mpg most of the time with just dual exhaust (no leaky headers for me), 2 bbl and a 3 speed manual. I also drive it like a truck, not dipping into the throttle to makes lots of noise or show off how much rubber I can burn. The 2 bbl carb is fine...changing to a 4 bbl certainly won't help your fuel economy in most cases, as the primary venturis will probably still be about the same size. I also have a Petronix ignition conversion, which may help.
Driven sensibly, it will get 12-16 for most guys. Like John said, compare that to the newest trucks and it really isn't much different, plus you get lower maintenance costs and zero payments with no interest for life!
I second that I got the 66 on the account the 2002 Ram 1500 Quad costs me $534.00 mo payments, $230.00 mo ins. $275.00 Regist yr and I put about 32 miles a week on it.
13mpg on street 18 on hwy roughly..
Ford $0.00 Mo. $120.00 yr Ins. $32.00 yr Regist 10-12mpg from what I can tell of the little driving I've done mostly surface street
I really appreciate the info. I know my truck is running very rich and was wondering if anyone might have a suggestion which jets to use in the original carb to get the best gas mileage? sounds like from this forum and others I have talked to this is a real help!
On a side note I do own a 2005 ranger that gets 28mpg...but is boring to drive and I'm not sure I want to be in a accident in that truck. 12-15 in my 66 would make me happy and probably keep the wife happy.
Well the Ranger does have airbags ,, but it's a Mazda face it LOL
and If you get hit by a 66 F100 man are you in for it..
Boring to drive ?? Hmmm I had a 2000 before the dodge and it drove like a sports car. 4cl 5spd no real ***** but handled great on windy roads and a dream in traffic..
Swen, Don't bank on 12-15 MPG, I think that is optimistic at best. If you get 10 consider yourself lucky. I'd look at it with the same angle that Redmanbob does, it's cheap to buy, and after you get the bugs worked out, it's cheap to maintain. The differance between 10 and 18 will take forever(if ever) to recover in a new truck with all it's added payments. My '65 352 C-6 get 8MPG(4:56 gears kill the MPG), and since I don't drive it all that far, it is tolerable, I certainly wouldn't trade it for a new one! Not to mention that EVERYONE knows who I am by the truck. You are little noticed in a new run-of-the-mill truck. AND, my wife(and for sure my kids) actually thinks it's cool to run an arrand in it every now and then. Ahhh, the brainwashing is finally starting to pay off!!!
My stock 66 352 gets 15 on the highway with out trying, but it's a manual. An auto is going to get worse, and an F250 weighs more, so the mileage will be down a little too. But there's alot you can do to bump those numbers up. If the carb's running rich, that will eat mileage. leaning ity out will improve things. headers will let the engine breath easier, and more efficantly, bumping the milage too. Unless you have a talent for setting points, a petronix ignition set will help, and be more reliable. Taller tires should also help a little, as well as running them at there highest pressure.
If you have a 5 lug axle with 2.70 gears, that isn't stock for a F250. neither is a 2 speed auto. Nothing wrong with that, except that your speedometer may not be calibrated for that setup, and so it's giving false reedings on mileage, so any estimate you make of MPG may be off. If it originaly had 3.50 gears, then the diffrence on the speedometer will be 25% low, meaning your 12MPG is realy 15MPG
Ok, I stand corrected and feel stupid. I do have the 8-lug wheels and the Cruise-o-matic transmission. I will be installing the Pertronix and rejeting the carb as soon as I figure out which jets to change it to. 15mpg would be great, and that would be the goal...maybe I can move my house to a large hill and just drive downhill everyday to work. I still think the rear ratio is about 2.70.
Oh, and the reason I say the Ranger is boring is that I also own a Lotus Elise and everything else IS just boring. (I get 35mpg in that!) But, it does not carry anything and having a truck to look over other cars is very nice for a change.
Have a dana 60 in my 262-6 cylinder. the ratio is 4:10 - and I have done all I can with jets, floats, and adjustments - what there is to a one barrel - but I can't get better than 10 mpg.
I could spend some dough on a 3.70 and improve that I suppose -but it would take a while to make that money up on the milage.
