I know I know it's the competitor, but I have no better source of knowledgable people to turn to 'cept for you guys. My mom has a 2000 Silverado, 5.3L V8 auto. The Service Engine Soon light popped on her today. I'm gonna let her drive my Ranger tommorow so I have all day to troubleshoot it, but I need to know where to start. Does it have "codes" such as our trucks do, that can be pulled to indicate problems? It has 131,317 miles on it. Any help is much appreciated thanks. No change it performance or any weird sounds. Drives normally. Gas cap is on tight. Thanks for the help.
Zach
Please do bring in the code #('s) and we'll help out. Thanks to the gubbermint, there is no competition with OBD2 codes. They are the same codes/meanings, except for a minor touch here and there, across the board.
Way too much to guess on, though. My mom's 98 Silvy has had gas cap codes (most common, I bet) and my sister's 01 Blazer had one for a bad t-stat. Both diagnoses were correct, so don't jump the gun with one sensor in mind...
Yeah it said in the manual it might be the gas cap or brand of gas if we had changed recently. But no change and the gas cap was tight. Oh well I'll see tommorow morning I guess.
Went to Autozone and had the codes pulled. Popped 307 - Cylinder 7 Misfire Detected, just like the guy said. Strange since the light is supposed to flash if there's a misfire, but it didn't. Oh well, I think we're going to tune it up. Suggestions? Thanks for the help.
You don't "tune up" that truck in the conventional sense. Is it running the original spark plugs and wires? That's the first thing I'd look for. Second is the coil pack. Has the truck gotten it's? 60/120K mile services completed?
Anybody know how to get the spark plugs out of a 2000 Silverado? I can't get the stupid little cover thing off. Thanks for your help once again.
Plugs/wires are original with 130K on it, I figure that's a good start... All other maintenance is up to date. My dad couldn't get the plugs out so decided not to do it apparently (which is why he doesn't get near my truck for anything, period).

Emissions devices need to be serviced every 60K (egr cleaned, etc). I can guarantee if he can't get the plugs out, that wasn't done. Air filters, fuel filters current?
No I did the 60K stuff and the filters. EGR I'll have to look in to, wonder how it would pass inspection like that. He said he would do the plugs while I was gone to camp. According to him it never got done.
I got the boots off. They had this metal "sheild" around them that I thought had to come off. Nope, pulled the wire off the module each one is attached to (8 seperate modules) and then just pulled and tugged a little bit and there was a "pop" as it came off. Got all new plugs and wires, about to start putting new ones on. I called him and told him how I did it and he said "are you sure that's all you did, I couldn't get them off." I think he was too afraid to break his investment, it takes not too much force. Anyways I'll tell ya'll how it went. Thanks for the suggestion polarbear.
Holy crap...swapped all 8, cranked it up, AMAZING difference. Idled fine in and out of gear. You can feel and hear it. The plugs came out easy polarbear, it was the boots that give problems. GM has each plug going to it's own individual coil about 6 inches up the block. The wire is short and getting it off the plug was a real PITA. Figured out how, no more problems. Getting them back on was fun though.
Just gotta figure out how to turn the SES light off now. I'm guessing 20 minutes without the battery connected? Or is there a switch somewhere to reset it or something?
All good, mom's going to get it cleared tommorow at lunch. Thanks again for all your help polarbear, especially considering it's your competitor's truck!
