What the %#%$!!! is this??!!!!!

After finally changing the Motorcraft battery that came with my truck after almost 8 years of service with a Wally World Everstart Maxx a couple months ago I open my hood this morning to change my drive belt to find this:

What is this? Looks to me like acid is leaking out of this battery and burning my stuff up. What would cause it? Defective battery? Thanks for any comments or suggestions.

Looks like it's been cooking from overcharging as best as I can tell from the photos.

Dang, clicking on links in posts... now, we are forced to go thru a bunch of advertisers? Surely will cut down on my linking.

Do you think it could be my alt. than? I didnt do this with the old battery, maybe cause it was weak and already on its way out? I think I will try exchanging the battery and see if it still does it. I have never saw this before.

I agree, looks like the battery may be getting overcharged.

When's the last time the alternator was tested? Should read pretty close to 14V at idle. Rather than exchanging the battery your self, I'd take the truck down to where ever you got the battery and have them do some load tests and alt. checks.

I'd go back for a warranty replacement and have them check the charging system. Could be your alternator/regulator has an overcharging problem.

Okay, after taking the truck to Advance Auto and having the alt. tested, which tested out okay, I went over to Wally World to exchange the battery. When I took the plastic cover off, I discovered that the battery looks the same as when I put it in and dosent appear to be leaking anywhere. However, there was some sticky coca cola appearing substance on it. After talking with my little brother, I found out that in his infinate willfullness to help his big bro. out, poured coke on the terminals to eat off the corrosion last time I changed the oil, so that burnt looking stuff was actually coke. As to not look like a total idiot at Wally World, I went in and bought some of them post washers and corrosion stop spray stuff and cleaned the posts and terminals and treated them with that stuff. Go ahead and laugh, I can roll with the punches, but that junk on top of the cover really looked like the battery was leaking.

The voltage regulator controls the amount of power pumped out.
I assume it is an integral VR

Yes, the VR is in the alt. The alt. was changed about 1.5 years ago for the same problem, except last time it did it, the dummy light guage pegged out so I knew there was a problem.

ClubFTE members have extra benefits about advertising. Unfortunately FTE has bills to pay to keep the site free - I'm not sure what page you're seeing but if it's the one I'm thinking of you should have a link right in the middle of the page that allows you to procede to the link you're trying to get to. It has a list of FTE sponsors on it - a form of helping our users recognize we have sponsors and raise awareness.

That yellow is the oxidization of the fluid in the battery (Lead and Iron from water deposits)

That battery has been cooking though.
Drive with your headlights on to reduce the amount of power being created

I know, I know, you got to pay for the site. That's fine, I understand. You've got banners all over the place, the left margin is all sponsors, and lately when we click on a link in a post, we're given more sponsors, then have to click again to get where we want to go...

Thank You.

I don't believe that is anything new - I believe that has been around for a long time (1 yr plus)...

All of that goes away with a ClubFTE membership...

Just wanted to clarify...

Wow, can we complain any more about a free service?

You give a man free ice cream and he gets upset because it doesn't have any toppings.
