hi i have a 84 f-150 2wd with a 300 I6 and it won't start. I was heading out of town, i just got the oil changed and full tank of gas, and when i was merging the truck started to sputter a little bit under part and full throttle. The truck would accelerate when it was sputtering but it accelerated very slowly, then it died after about 3 miles. It will turn over but not start. I have changed out the fuel filter and pump along with having the 1 bbl carb rebuilt in the last year. I pulled a plug and laid it on the block and had my little bro try to start the truck and i didn't see any spark. Any advice?
Duraspark module took a dump is a good guess..........
Pull the coil wire and see if theres spark at the coil, that will eliminate cap and rotor/wire issues, unless you DO have spark at the coil, in which case it would confirm them.
Hi, I have an 84 also, and if it isn't duraspark, it could be that the module took a crap (the gray module on the side of the distributor to which the primary wires connect). Your ignition are your secondary wires (after the coil). If there is no spark, the chances are that the module went bad. Take it off and bring it with to a autoparts chain. Most of them test them for free. If thats not the case. Thats if it won't start w. verified no spark. When you pulled out the plug, did you make sure it was sufficiently grounded? Another way is to just pull a plug wire back off a plug about 1/2 inch, while having someone crank it. If you can hear it spark, then it could be your fuel pump took a dump. From the way you described it, it sounds like it was starving for fuel, because if the module went, it would have died instantaneously.
Many years ago I had an 85 f150 with the 300 6cyl. in it.. I had simular issues at one time and it turned out to be the module on the distributor..Good luck with it..
finally had a chance to work on the truck and i'm still stuck...checked for spark from the module and got spark, got spark from the wire to the distributor and got spark from spark plug wires but it still wouldn't start...even sprayed some instant starting fluid in the carb and it wouldn't start. i went out and got a new module and it was doing the same ****...i didn't install it right away, i just plugged in the wires and layed it on the other one. could it not be starting because i don't have the module grounded completely? i did notice that i was getting a really weak spark, if i cranked it for a couple of seconds sometimes it wouldn't even spark...any advice would be greatly appriecated!
no it turns over normally, it just doesn't fire, i'm gonna put on the new module and see if it just needs to be fully grounded in a little bit...hopefully that will do it...
The 300 won't have a timing chain. So that really isn't an issue. Although the timing gears can lose teeth if they are the phenolic type. That might be the problem, but its unlikely.
finally found the problem last nite...after calling a buddy and checking a few things i pulled the distributor and found out it was junk...the gear on the rotor shaft stayed in the block when i pulled the dist. out, only bad thing is when i went to get the gear out i dropped it and it fell into the oil pan...ordered a dist. today, it should be in tomorrow and hopefully i'll get the blue dragon running like a champ by tomorrow nite
