i have a 4.9 i6 EFI stock except for enhanced intake and exhaust (no miles on engine..referbished). i don't have the money now and i also don't necessarily need any of this anyway but outta curiousity, what would be better: nitrous, turbo, or super? what would be the overall cheapest route? advantages or disavantages? with my engine getting its max torque at a low rpm, is there a better option? if anyone has the time to enlighten me, i appreciate it. thanks.
chris
IMO I'd stay away from NOX and SC's on a 4.9. As to a turbo, much less other power upgrades, the main limiting factor is the computer and the sensors that talk to it.
I've been considering what to do with mine(88 with over 276k original). The best "bang for the buck" would be a conversion to MAF from SD and possibly a pair of smaller turbos for faster spool up. Of course an intercooler is advisable to keep intake temp and egt's down as well as larger injectors to feed to fueling side of things.
The big hassle in my search is that there is only one limited year for a 4.9 MAF SFI EEC-IV application in California and nobody seems to know what the program code(s) is. On the up side of this is there is appearent ability to use a 5.0 or 5.8 MAF EEC-IV and with a chip foul it into running a 4.9 I6.
nitrous is cheap to put on and expensive to keep runing, supercharge it and you will always have a parasitic power loss. go with the turbo. get a sizable turbo, a single will work fine, a nice intercooler(people just don't realize that this is a nessecity rather than an extra piece), and go with a nice aftermarket efi and make more horse a torque than your tranny can handle. i don't know much about the 4.9l and its computer system so i would just go with a system like simple digital systems. heck, just run a carb. hope this helps a little.
