Help me decide what engine I should install in the '49 F4. I was originally thinking 351 ahead of a C6 but realize I want an OD transmission to get any road speed. The old Timken will come out and a sixties vintage DRW rear end will replace it. Road friendly ratios are limited in these early rear ends. The later Dana 70s are too wide to fit under the Ford script stake bed and still would not give acceptable road speeds without OD.
I really don't want to get into a steering box relocation or swap, that may be involved with a V8 install, as my box is tight. I don't want PS.
I don't know that I really want to go with the wiring involved with fuel injection or that of the electronic transmission controls.
So what is a relative simple replacement for the flat six? I am easy on equipment. Would the Ford AOD hold up? Would I be better served with a SBC and a Chevy OD transmission.
Discuss.

Is the F-4 steering box that much bigger? I wouldn't have thought so.
I'd look around and see what is available at the best price and in the best condition. I don't know that I'd trust an AOD with the torque flowing thru it for a large truck. It would be nice to have a manual IMO.

The steering box is not that much larger than on a smaller truck as near as I can tell. I just thought getting the exhaust manifold past it would be a problem with most any V8 except perhaps a Y block with cross over.

I am looking for any and all options. I'd like to keep it simple. I figure if it has been done, someone on here has done it or seen it done.

I just measure the steering box intrusion and it is almost five inches into the engine bay from the inside top of the frame rail to the end of the adjustment screw cap. About four and a quarter to the inside of the gearbox housing.
So will any, other than a flathead V8 clear this?
Caddy V8... monster torque so you can use a plain old TH400 (indestructable) with a tall axle, not worry about OD. Same or lower weight than a 350 SBC, believe it or not. Lots of donors out there. He used a 500 but a 429 or 472 would do in a pinch.
He changed his F-1 to front-steer but I'm not sure if it was for clearance.
