Will the ring and pinion gears from a F-250 Superduty fit our trucks (well, more specifically, my 94' F-250 with a D50 TTB front and a 10.25" Sterling rear)?
The reason I ask is I have 4.10 gears and find it much too low for my useage. I'd like to go to taller gears and frequently see 3.73's from low mileage super duty's selling very cheep. The superduty in question uses a 10.25 rear and a Straight D-50 front, but I'm pretty sure the internals are the same. Can anyone confirm this?
I talked to some folks in the know and the answer is yes - Straight axle D-50 gears from a late model super duty will fit a D-50 TTB. Also, the SD 10.25 gears are the same as ours. So anyone wanting 3.73's can use super duty gears.
Now, I must decide what I want to gear to - 3.73's or 3.55's.
Useage is mostly pulling a 3k lbs box trailer on the interstates. Currently I only get decent mileage by staying below 60mph and actually closer to 55mph. I'd like to cruise closer to 65-70mph but don't want it to become a slug taking off from a stop either. From a crusing standpoint the 3.55's look like the ticket, but can anyone comment on how the truck feels around town with them?
I would go with the 3.73.A buddy of mine has them and i like the way his truck pulls.I have 4.10s and i think that there a little to low for my applacation.IMO
Yes, I currently have 4.10's and find them much to low for my useage. Looks like I can get a great price on a set of 3.73's, but then I also have an extra front end with 3.55's in it and would only need to find gears for the rear end to match.....
I am lookin at a '93 1 ton w/ 4.10 gears. Would it be better to buy new gears or go to a wrecker to find used ones if I wanted to change it to 3.73? Its only 2WD by the way.....so I wouldnt have to do 2 diffs. Thanks guys
If the 93' is non-turbo'd and you plan to tow much you might want the 4.10's otherwise the cheepest way to find gears is to find some used ones from a PSD guy who changed them out (usually to accomodate larger tires).
OK...well the '93 is turbo'd but while I am at it it has a Garrett turbo...is that factory? And I was also planning on changing the downpipe with the ATS kit to the full 3" and I will be towing a 3 horse gooseneck trailer with it.....loaded with 3 horses its about 8500 - 9000 lbs. I was only thinking of going higher gears to get better MPG. My 91 non turbo w/ 3.55's pulls it OK at 60 MPH so I thought this would be evern better.....Thanks fer yer input guys
If it looks like this under the hood then the turbo is factory

If not, then you have an aftermarket system of some sort. The ATS system is virtually identicle to the factory setup, only with the bigger dp/turbo outlet and the intake doesn't have the ford oval on it. ATS/Ford both use the same Garrett turbo (T-3 IIRC).
The banks and hypermax systems look much different, but I don't have pics of them.
Towing that much weight I'd be tempted to leave the 4.10's in, but it might be ok with the taller gears???

FWIW, my '69 had 4.10s and I switched to 3.73s, only dropped an average of 100 RPMs at crusing speeds and didn't help my milage at all. I should have gone with the 3.50s.
