Yes...I put a complete 3" true dual exhaust setup on my 85 6.9L with 18" glass packs. I had a 79' F350 with a 400+ HP 460 and the same 3" duals and same 18" glass packs, and it sounded like it had factory mufflers compared to the 6.9. I started out with the pipes set out at 90 degrees behind the rear wheels. I could not carry on a conversation in the cab at 65mph unloaded; and loaded was unbearable. I had the glass packs installed "backwards"; which completely eliminated any and all traces of "jake brake" noise at deceleration (which was what I wanted).
I have since had the pipes set straight out the rear under the bumper and really like the way it sounds now, low throaty rumble with a good amount of pop when I get on it. It is still pretty loud in the cab, especially with a load, but at least now my ears don't ring for 20 minutes after I get where I am going.
My truck sounds great...don't get me wrong...but it was so loud and percussive (especially between about 1800-2600 rpm) I had to set the pipes out the back. Add to that my truck has 4spd, no OD, and 4.10 gears, the 6.9 is screaming and very close to the governed rpm's at 70 mph.
As far as cost goes...about $350 total, and that is with your basic "see through" bullet style glasspacks. My truck is an extended cab with 8' bed, so there was a LOT of pipe involved to get duals all the way out the rear. I had both pipes run down the passenger side of the truck to just in front of the rear axle, where the driver's side pipe crosses back over just behind the axle. I noticed a significant increase in power and responsiveness after the duals were put on.

Yah i have the same model truck, except mines an 83 350 isnt bad, what kind of glasspacks were they, offbrand, dynomax, etc.. would true dual be louder than single?
I just bought a 86 F250 6.9L w/ a single 3x12(estimate, but it's quiet small) inch glasspack which comes out directly behind the cab. I drove the truck home from Rochester NY-Richmond VA in the snow with no heat or radio. The truck sounds cool, not what you'd expect from a diesel. It sounds like a gas V8. It was actually fun to listen to on the way home(600 miles). It all depends on you personal noise tolerence level. I'm putting a single 3" baffel type muffler in it's place and turning it out in front of the rear tire, to get by inspection and keep the police from bothering me. I have a loud car, I don't need a loud truck too. I can't imagine that any exhaust could be much louder then mine, except it you ran staight pipe. If you want serious sound, go for it.
Dad put glass packs on his 1984 F250 with 6.9. That was 20 years ago. They had a "nice" cackle at about 45MPH in third gear. I don't remember a much about the setup, as far as power or mileage
I have the 6.9 3.55 c6 setup with hypermax turbo. Now the turbo dampens noise a lot but it still needs a muffler(my opinion). My inspection mechanic suggested a tractor muffler, straight thru. I found an IH 3" straight thru at TSC stores. Sounds real nice, not too loud but loud under load. Bonus, lower egt and higher boost. Hope this helps.
Thanks, kro4 whered u get yout turbo, i want to install one in my truck but theyre so expensive and im not knowledgable on diesel engines repair wise, i can work on gas engines just find but havent got that much knowledge on diesels so id want someone to install it for me probably. how do u like the hypermax most people ive talked to have ats or banks so id love some positive feedback from the hypermax. thanks a lot

Go with a waste gated not the Hypermax. It was all I could get for the E van I have. Waste gate will give you more off the line power but both are about the same when the rpm's are up and you are towing. Hypermax were less than helpful with problems I had with their product. I won't go into it here. The turbo will wake up the 6.9 but then headgaskets can be a problem when you turn up the wick on this motor. Search posts, lots on various sites about turbo install. Good luck. Oh, if I were not towing I would not have bothered with a turbo.
