67 F250 starter problem

67 F250 starter problem
Put a new starter on when I put my new 300 in last year. It is now grinding or something. Makes a god awful noise that tells ya something is screwed up. Mounting bolts are tight. I know form working on other vehicles that there is sometimes a need to space the starter so that the gear rides on the flywheel correctly. Is this what I need to do. Happens when it is cold. Not when it is warm and starting. Any suggestions. Trying to save my self some time. Thanks

Pull the starter off and see what the drive gear on starter looks like, also look at flywheel. There may be only one spot on the flywheel that is missing teeth and that may explain why it only happens occasionally. It really shouldnt matter whether it is warm or not if your problem is indeed the starter.

When warm it does not make the noise. When cold it turns over but but make a loud sort of noise I know its the starter or like you mentioned the flywheel. Could it be bendix or something. The flywheel was also new last year. I will try and look at it tonight.
