I was told by some one at one time that they were all the same from 78-96 except for the third brake light and seatbelts. I'm not sure that person was relable but he did have six broncos of various years in his yard at the time. If that was true I would think that the ones with the sholder stap seatbelts would be stronger.
78 and 79 are the same, the change came in 1980 but they remained virtually identical from 80 through the end of production in 1996. 1992 saw a minor change when the high-mount stop lamp was incorprated into the exterior cargo lamp above the rear window and the anchors for the shoulder harness rear seat belts were added above the middle of the side windows. 1978-79 tops are interchangable and 1980-96 tops will swap with no trouble. 78-79 tops will not swap to 80 or later.
