Question Cleaning a Photograph...??

Thought I had posted this last night but couldn't find it even through a search. I must have screwed up somewhere. If by chance this is a double-post I offer my apologies...

Anybody know a way to clean a photograph? I found a bunch of old photos I had stored away and would like to scan them into my computer but some of them look like they could use a little "clean up". I have a couple of photo programs I can try to touch them up with, but I'm certainly no pro at it. Past results sure haven't been top-notch anyway.

I'm trying to put together a little web site and some of these photos would be great to use on it, if I can get them to look presentable.

Any Ideas???

Might be a good time to start learning Photoshop. The program has to be one of the most difficult programs to "just turn on and use", but after you get the basics down - it's very powerfull. (I found Visual Basic to be about the same way.) Try doing a google search on your software using the name of your software and "tutorial". This usually gives some great hits.

Physically, if you gently wipe down the photos with a damp, very soft cloth before you scan, it'll clean up some of the finger prints and misc. stains they usually develop over the years. If the photo's in pristine shape and not that valuable, I've washed them in the sink - but I wouldn't chance it with the only photo of "Uncle Earl".

There are places that will digitally clean up old photos. I don't think it's cheap, but the results are pretty amazing. If you have some time to spend on it, it's probably worth learning how to do it yourself. They key thing is to take your time and save often. that way if you mess up you won't have to start from scratch.

Try these folks:

http://www.eastman.org/

That's not Kodak, but the George Eastman House, which hosts the International Museum of Photography. I'm sure one of the curators there can answer your questions.
