block heater

I have a 1999 F150 Xlt 4x4.Should I be able to hear the block heater when I have it plugged in?Some block heaters you can hear and they sound like a kettle.

Don't know? I assume the sound your are referring to is probably the same sound the water heater in a house makes.

If you want to do a quick check, you should be able to take an ohmmeter and check for continuity through the 110v plug, just like you would while checking a home water heater element, to see if it's burned out.

if all your trying to do is insure that its operating , you can touch the plug next to the engine, it will be warm, the cord may also be warm , if its snowing , your windshield will not build up with ice , you can also pull the radiator cap and put your finger in the fluid , it wont be hot , but it wont be as cold as the outside temp
