Way fast ford build

Hi guys, it's been a while since i've been on here. Last time I was here I was planning to put a 460 in a 4X4. Since then I have changed my mind about that big 4X4 stuff for one main reason, I lost my best friend a while ago, he rolled his big lifted ford bronco and it killed him, and injured one of my other buddies. So know i'm shy of big lifted ***** out 4X4's. Now i'm building a 73 f100 2wd, and i'm going to put the 460 in that. I'm building a serious street machine that will get from 0-60 as fast as possible on pump gas, and run down the quarter strip on the weekends. Im thinking shaved doors, tailgate, electric cutouts on 3" dual pipes, and a set of 295-15 BFG TA's out back. Going to go with a C6 floor shifter and line locks. I've got to keep myself busy for a while and I beleive this project will do it. I picked the truck up for a whopping $100 COB (cash on the barrel hand). The body has no rust, and very few small minor dents (great body). It had a 302 and 4spd, but the motor blew. Also what do I have to do to get this motor to bolt in? Do I have to buy the conversion kit, or can i find the mounts for a 460 and use those? Anybody have any other suggestions on what to do to this thing?

If this engine is going to put out some power and hook up I would suggest the Autofab 460 engine mounts they are almost a solid mount in a way that they wont rip apart as there is a bolt through the center of a bushing. You can always use stock 460 stands and mounts but with what u want to do I reccomend an upgrade. Or you could use stock and add a chain or limiter cable incase it tries to hop out. I have the L&L conversion stands and mounts in my 4x4 and they have a lifetime warranty on their mounts, good thing because I just put my 2nd one in a day ago. that makes one per yr I have been driving it.http://www.autofab.com/2wd460.htm click on the link again on the sponser page after it redirects you.

If you do a search for *460 swap*, you should see at least 110 threads related to this swap.

No offense, and I'm not trying to change you mind on your project, but do you think that running FAST 1/4 miles in one of these trucks is safer than a lifted 4x4?

I made my own engine mounts after trying another popular brand and running into header clearace problems.

If you go with mfg. mounts, contact Jeffs Bronco Grave Yard, (http://www.broncograveyard.com/index.php) they can hook you up with mounts and headers to work. ( I like the fenderwell headers, they make the exhaust route easy.)

460 Crew,

I got your PM and I hope my response answered your question.
I wish I had a way to post a picture, so it might help some one, or start a better idea.

The whole 4x4 thing, i have noticed if they are lifted, they don't ever seem to handle as well, and then i have to mess with axels, and lifted trucks tend to seem to have more body roll, at high speeds lifted 4x4's tend to jerk around easily. I have had some experience with a 77 ford highboy with a L88 427 chevy that we built and installed. I did race it, but at high speeds it seemed to be too jerk too easily, because it wasn't just quarter mile racing, sometimes you get into it on the streets, sometimes you have to jerk to miss a kid walking in the street or crossing it, or some grandma pulling out in front of you. This isn't just a quarter mile racer fellas. I could never keep U joints in that front end with that 427, so dana 60's would defenitly be in the works for a 4x4. I know how easily accidents happen. Also with lifted 4x4's you have to watch your tires, because if you have a blow out, you have a lot farther to fall with say a 38 than you do with a 235-295, which in turn will tend to pull off the road harder, and if you aren't expecting it (who is) you stand the potential to roll, in either one, but your chances are higher in a lifted truck. Why would you build a lifted 4x4 to run quarters in anyway, I know it happens, because we're all curious as to what our rigs can do, but didn't you base building your pickup more towards the off road application? Unless you can shift from 4low to 4hi quickly, a lifted 4x4 with big tires wont launch as quickly as a truck with smaller tires, unless you got a bigger mill under your hood. This is simply just my opinion, which really dosen't mean much, this is simply how I see this matter, and by no means did I mean to offend anybody.

Maybe the Ford was trying to throw the chevy engine out of it.

If you change the gears in a truck with bigger tires on it, it will seem like a bigger mill. That is what i have learned in racing on a dirt track.

The Chevy stuff belongs in a chevy..... FWIW, we had a '59 C10 chevy with a 429 FORD motor it, that thing was wicked fast and would pull a house too.
