yeah, you can do this in-frame, but it might be easier to take the engine out. To do it in-frame, you have to jack up the truck on the framerails (not the suspension/axles) so that the engine will come up more above the crossmember for the axle. Once you get it high enough, you can take the pan off and start fanangaling a ratchet in there to take off the rod caps, just be really careful when spinning in new ones that you get them in straight, as with the angle you'll be at it might be difficult, and use plenty of pre-lube for them. That might also be a good time to polish the crank while you have the pan and bearings off. Good luck.
First how many miles does the engine have if your gonna replace the rod bearing you might as well just pull the engine out and tear it down and just do a complete overhaul and first of all you can't polish the crank while it's in the engine. So you have new bearing on the crank new cam bearings new rings have the valves reseated. All of those things are not costly. Trying to do it with the engine still in the truck will be costly after your done and everything is put back together and you spin a new bearing or your rod caps fall off cause you couldn't get them torqued down properly.
the first question is why you want to replace the bearings. if it is because of low oil pressure check it with a manual gage. my 4.9 has 364,587klms on it and i would not even think of installing new ones
