Engine vibration @ ~1,000 - 2,000 RPMs

1993 Ford F150 5.0L 4x4. Truck appears to be idling fine and runs good over ~2,000 RPMs. Problem is that when cruising along, between ~1,000 and ~2,000 RPMs the truck is vibrating/shaking badly. As soon as I give it more gas and kick it in the vibration stops. The truck will also begin vibrating/shaking under braking, again when the RPMs get into the 1,000 – 2,000 range. When braking to a complete stop the tach needle will dip down to ~700, 800 range then raise back up to ~1,000 when stopped.

In a way to me it sounds like a transmission/torque converter problem (lock up).

on the rpm issue, i would make sure your firing order is right, and you dont have any cables crossed on it.

I agree with the tranny or torque converter. I'd say the torque converter is not locking up completely.

I concur with the torque converter lock up thoughts. What is the history behind the tranny in your truck? How many miles on it? Any previous work done on the tranmission or other drive line components like the driveshaft or such? If the tranny fluid has never been changed out I would tend to start there by doing a complete flush and fill with a new filter and see if it helps quite down the shudder. What kind of condition is the tranny fluid in right now?

Cheers!

Mike

This truck has the AOD tranny right? I'm not sure about those, but I do know that the E4OD's had some problems with torque converter "Shudder" during certain RPM ranges.

Going through that right now on a F-350, only does it in overdrive or when under a load. You can idle around in drive and it'll go about 8-10 mph sometimes.

Thats kinda wierd. I installed a torque converter lockup cancel switch on my truck to keep it from locking up at 30 MPH like it was doing and causing it to run at about 800 RPM. I lock it up around 40 or 45 so that it doesn't bog the truck down so bad. Now I have to look into a trans rebuild since mine is on its last legs... anyone know of any cheap places?

Wfields86, this thread is so old, it can almost get a driver's license.

Aside from that, the post that uk_dave made to start this thread, is the only post he's ever made so you're not going to get an answer. Start your own thread.

Because I don’t want 50 people saying maybe it’s this maybe it’s that have you tried this. Then someone else posts something that’s wrong with their truck and the subject gets changed again. I wanna talk to someone who had the same problems me and him had/have so I can fix my truck not play 50 questions

you havent gave, (as well as OP didnt) enough info, like auto/manual, everyone assumed auto, what speed(1000-2000 rpm big difference), how big are tires, rear gearing, you feel it start in hands or in the seat of your pants, so you may have 150 questions, just to get to start helping, dont want all the questions, try google -- (93 f150 5.0l aod, engine vibrates:fte.com) and literally 433 responses show up, then read til your hearts content

That’s why I was pretty much asking him and not you on if he got his problem fixed because he had the exact same problem I’m having obviously you never had this problem so your opinion and response is irrelevant that’s the problem with the USA now people don’t know when to keep their mouth shut and wanna put their 2 cents in on everything while they hid behind a computer or phone

He tried to help you by saying that the OP only had one post which was over 14 years ago and never followed up after his initial question. Good luck in finding the cause of your vibration.
