I have a 2150 2 bbl on a 302 in my 82 f-150 4x4. this is not the original motor. I noticed that i was not having the top end acceleration that i should have so i looked to the vacuum for the distributor and it was hooked up to the tree coming from the intake manifold. This not being where it was supposed to be i found the correct location( passenger side front of the butterflyvalve). When i hooked it up this way i lost a little idle speed but the acceleration was bettter at the top end! I set the idle screw up a little bit. The problem i have now is when i step down on the brakes it trys to kill the motor? Losing vacuum right? It was in the same location that it was in before i switched the vacuum advance. (centered low behind carb) My brake booster has been hissing in the cab and the brake peddle has needed help returning upward after i press it. The brakes before hissed but they did stop the truck without trying to kill it! Booster going out? Or do i have it hooked up wrong? I tried to hook it to the tree and it did the same thing! thanks for any help!
Sounds like you have a bad booster that's leaking vacuum.
The dist. was hooked up to manifold vacuum (which was wrong) before you put it on the carb. You need to reset the initial timing with it unhooked (and booster fixed) to about 10 degrees BTDC. Then hook the line back up to the carb.
You may have to readjust the idle once you reset the timing.
It should probably idle about 650rpm in gear and 750-800rpm in park.
You can leave the EGR plugged. It also used ported vacuum like the distributor, but only when the engine is at normal operating temp, which would mean that you would have to redo all of the factory lines and use the temp controlled vacuum trees on the engine.
Whats a good price to pay for a new/used booster? I noticed that one of my mail order mags says the application for the booster is years 81-83 what else will work if i go to the salvage yard? Whats the differance to the other years?84-86
