460 engine weight

How does the weight of a 460 compare with a 360/390 or a 302. My shop manual refers to a 460 as a "light weight design". I see a lot of people putting 460s in place of 302s...would the front springs have to be upgraded?

460 engine weight

Someone posted the weight of the 429 a little while ago as they were either shipping one or having one shipped.
They are heavier than the 390 and a lot heavier than a 302.
When I swapped in my 429,I did the front springs shortly afterward, basically because they needed doing.

If you don't stabilize the front end, the extra weight will eventually wear out your front end(been there, done that) till the front tires literally toe in .

NOPE, you can find some beefier coils, you do not want to go to leafs,,, I bought lift coils for my 77 F150 4x4 for about 125 to handle the extra weight of bumper winch and possible 460, about $125 for a pair.

just get some coils from an f-250 that was equiped with a 460, that should work just fine.

F-150 and F-250 have the same coils. There is the standard coil, and an HD coil. F-150s with 460s had HD coils. And all F-250s had HD coils. THere are some variances im sure but thats the short and simple of it.

Personally... id pick up some leveling coils... 150- 200$ and if anything it will sit more level and carry the weight just fine. Im pretty sure all aftermarket coils have the same pounds per inch rating as the HD ones or heavier.

Id have to agree with what has already been said. For sure need to upgrade suspension but no need to go leafs unless you really want to. You see those King of the Hammers trucks blowing up boulders with coils and fully independent suspension for that matter. it all really comes down to how much coin you're willing to spend. Not upgrading weight capability in SOME way would be a bad idea in this case.

Probably something he didn't want to talk about.
My '77 F-250 Camper Special had a 460/C6 in it and I'll be putting that in a '76 F-100. I'll save those springs until I find a CV IFS from a cop car. Just in case.

Hey, at least I found out that my 460 is 720 pounds, with zf transmission, accessories and radiator it must mean that it's going to be a heavy lift for my engine hoist. anybody ever do a tail shaft to rad lift. It's coming out of a truck thats getting cut up for scrap so I'll be cutting the frame so that it's out of the way, chopping off the rest of the cab tomorrow

Shouldn't be a problem. Just use a load leveler to level the lift.
