i am replacing the motor in my 65 4x4, it has a motor mount in the front of the engine right under the timeing cover, need to pull off all the parts i am going to use on the new motor,( timeing cover, oil pan,ex)and get them ready
cleaning, repaint. I am leaveing the motor in until i can get some help next week.
can that mount come out , with out pulling the engine? best way to get it out
I changed one of those mounts years ago. I don't think you need to pull the engine, just maybe have to jack the engine up with a floor jack and block of wood between the jack and oil pan.
FWIW, I just read on this site about truck vs car engines in your vintage. I *think* that the nose of the crank is of larger diameter than the passenger engine. In other words, you have to do some fiddlin' or make sure you are getting a truck engine, or rebuild the one you have.
Remember, I'm just opining.

A posting I just read on this site noted the fact that the engines used in trucks may have motor mounts (front) that mount to the bottom(?) of the timing chain cover. Those that do, have a larger diameter crankshaft nose. I think it has forged vs cast crankshaft also. Maybe I'm just getting too old and am imagining things.... but I thought I read it, and wanted to make sure that if you do have one of these, you are aware that there are differences between auto and truck versions.

No need to worry. The early 4x4 FE (65 and 66 I think) used a different mounting system (under the timing cover and tabs on the bellhousing), but the diameter of the crank snout should be the usual factory size. The big snout is on the FT medium and big duty truck line.
I do think you will need to hold off on pulling the timing cover after you remove the motor though.
thanks, pulled it out. it came out alright once i pull the bottom bellhouseing bolts, should get the heads in the am. i am good at takeing thing apart but geting it back is another should know by the weekend.
