Headers through the hood?

I had this on the exhaust forum but didnt get answers from someone with actual expierience with it so I'm putting it here also. Has anyone tried this? I would like to know if they are too loud inside the truck or if any fumes come into the cab? Does anyone have an opinion regarding ones through the hood compared to the chassis exit headers(these would be left open as well)? THis is for a 78 F-250 with a 460 and it is strictly for off-road use only so legality is not an issue.
I have found a few manufacturers that make truck pull and derby type headers that exit the hood and they are a lot cheaper than the fenderwell exit headers. Another concern with the hood exit is getting mud and water into the engine compartment and doing damage(the truck is a mud bogger, not a mud racer)If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Thanks, Dave

Dave, I run headers through the hood and it is one of the best things I have done to my bogger. They are alot louder, have no exhaust fumes in the cab, also you don't have to worry about your headers getting clogged up with mud when you get pulled out. As far as mud and water getting into engine compartment make sure your wiring is sealed good, as far as intake problems I run a cold air intake setup that runs into the passenger compartment. Hope this helps.

Thanks dbhr thats the info I was looking for. My main concern was the fumes coming back into the cab. I know how much fun it is trying to unplug about a foot of exhaust pipe from backing out of a hole and packing them full.
In case anyone is interested these are some less expensive hood exit headers I have found.

and

Though I haven't seen the truck pull headers yet the one Schoenfeld makes for dirt cars seem to be a pretty well made and stand up to a fair amount of abuse.
Thanks again dbhr, and if anyone else has any tips or ideas I'd like to hear it.
Thanks, Dave

I ran the dec headers on my cleveland the price is right, and they were pretty good headers imo.
As far as water and mud I run my aircleaner high enough and under a scoop and it doesn't seem to pick up much mud at all then I just run a prefilter from K&N which is made from nylon, let it dry a few minutes (really doesn't take long with the heat of the engine) and take it off shake well reinstall and go again.
But if you want a pretty cool way to get an air filter onto your carb and be able to run a hose inside the cab for the intake check out this site they have some really good flowing setups that seal up easily enough.

Nice rigs monsterbaby! thanks for the tip on the ram air box, they have a single inlet box that will work perfectly. I was going to run dryer went hose to the firewall and mount a cone shaped filter in the cab, but that box is a much better setup.

Honeslty I don't know what brand they are I bought them used off a truck puller down in MO who was switching heads.
Yes those are the taylor 409s on both engines actually. I prefer them over any other wire I have ever tried.
go ahead and ask not a pain to me.

WV, I run the Schoenfeld ones on my bogger. They are good for the price. But they rust up quick. To keep the crap our I have those clanking rain caps on mine. I love them. I always wanted a bogger with tractor pull headers. You won't be sorry. And if you run into a steering shaft problem like I did, I can help you solve that too. I also run the Taylor 409 wires. They are awsome as well. Well worth the money.

I also run the schoenfeld tractor pulls on my 460, I like them but before you install them I would sand off the paint and buy some header paint. Paint them again and then put them in an oven (follow directions on can). The paint that is on them is nothing more than spray paint and it takes no time for them to start rusting. If you are running a small block ford you can buy the derby type zoomies from schoenfeld which are even cheaper than the headers.
