Hi I have not posted in this forum yet. I currently have a bronco. I am looking to maybe get something a little newer then my 91. I have been looking into an expedition. I wanted to do a little research before I buy so i know what I am getting into, which I didn't do with my bronco and I learned the hardway.
Basically, I wanted to know what to look for when buying one and what issues they may have(e.i. MPG, any tranny problems, mechanical, rust). this will be a daily driver that I will also want to tow a 5500 car and trailer with on a weekly basis in the warmer weather, I do live in the northeast so I do want 4x4. The years I am looking at are 97-2000 and i would like to keep it at about 8k or under if that is possible to get a nice one for that price. Any help you guys can offer would be great I just want to know that this will be a reliable truck and that will handle what I want it for. I have had my share of trouble with all the common bronco issues and I can't afford to have to sink a lot of money into maintaining a truck like I have to with my bronco
Stay with the 5.4 engine/4R100 transmission combination if you tow with such frequency. The 4.6 uses a lighter duty transmission and a smaller differential. Check the bottom of each door (where the outer door skin wraps over the inner door shell)and the seams that mate the inner rear fender and outer rear fender (in the upper wheelwell area) for signs of rust. Check the board for reports of cylinder head sealing and spark plug thread stripping on the 5.4's.
It's a big 4x4 and you plan to tow. Regardless of the SUV you have in mind, maintenance costs won't be low.
thanks, I figure i wil have to spend money maintaining it, but for example the e4od in my bronco needed to be rebuilt with a new converter and a year and a half later and only towing with it about 5 times it was acting up again. So it seems like your saying they rust out in the same spots as a bronco.
Pretty much, although Ford cut salt belt owners a minor break by making the hood out of aluminum. The tailgate, though made of steel, seems to hold up better as well.
let me ask you guys this all the expeditions I am seeing in my comfortable price range are at 100k give or take. Is that kind of the hump for these trucks.
...i found a VERY nice 97 (5.4 4x4 3.73 xlt 77k) in 2004 for $8 (had to look quite a bit). and i just got a cherry '00 EB 2x4 5.4L 48k for $12. just take your time and look around for a good deal (not sure what the market's like over there, but here there are a ton of 'em for sale (though they do move fast when they're good)). and remember that a dealer lot price of $9-11 could easily go down under $8 - especially this time of year.
as far as mpg i'd expect 10-13 city and slightly higher highway for a 4x4.
Wife just picked her up a 99 EB Expy, 2wd, completely Loooa-dddd-ed, sitting on brand new Michelins (LTX M/S).... w/ 71k miles for less than 11k.
Other than the tilt-wheel causing blinkers to malfunction, radio LCD LEDs fading in/out, noisy air-ride compressor, very minor body blemishes, and the errant french-fry stuck in the overhead vents, she got one hell of a deal.
But then again, we live near Atlanta, and if you don't like the price at one Ford dealership, you can always go across the street to another Ford dealership. Kid you not.
I picked up my wife's 99 expedition last year with 101k on the odometer, 1 owner vehicle, for 9900.00, it was VERY well maintained. The reason I decided to go ahead and buy this vehicle was the track record of the 2wd Expeditions that the Air Force used in the field here in Montana, they had over 240k on the odometer and when we picked them up for our folks to use temporarily here at the Air Guard unit all we had to do is replace 1 alternator on one of them and brakes on the other. I did not hesitate after I checked this one out and bought it, if it's well maintained I'd buy it. that's my .02 cents
so what do you guys think i could get for say 10-14K. I see tons of them for sale here in NJ on auto trader and some are like 10 and one that seems to be the exact same truck could be 15k. I am starting to think I should look for a 2000-2002ish with under 100k.
just take your time, look around and be patient. and remember that the sticker prices at new car dealer lots are jokes. the expy i got had a sticker of $17 and i got it for 12. if you shop at dealer lots that also sell new cars, the used ones will be trade-ins (most likely), which means the dealer paid next to nothing for it (check the kbb trade-in values) and you should be able to talk yourself into a good deal. especially now nearing the end of the month - and this month is supposed to be a real slow month for dealers...
