Am I the only person here that wants auto hubs? The guy that owned my truck before me put manuals on it and I cant seem to find any autos to put back on it. It's a 95 150 5.8 SC SB by the way. If anybody knows were I can find some let me know.
i would stay with the manuals ,they have a better track record on wear and tear ,mine were replaced with manuals, if you think ya need 4wd ,keep hubs locked but 4wd turned off ,it'll be ready when you need it
I have a couple sets of the auto hubs lying around the garage - 1 from our son's 92 Bronco and the other from our daughter's 93. We replaced with manuals. They were working ok when removed about a year ago. If you would like a set I would be happy to entertain an offer.
Hi, I was thinking of putting my auto hubs back in as well, I put the Warn manuals in, but I like the ease of knowing that when I get on the freeway I am unlocked totally. However I had toasted the front passenger one. I could leave em locked but undo it from inside as mentioned, but still is not totally free of movement I believe. I still have to repair the problem up front and fix the problem as why it fried the auto hub, as now it still does not lock in on that side. I did not know the autos are that expensive. I will then keep what I have and fix the problem, thanks for info.
Don't leave the hubs locked in while on the highway, everything will be moving (transfer case, diff, etc.) just like if you have it locked in from inside. Fuel mileage will go down, part's wear out, etc.
And the first time you get stuck without being in 4x4, you will be glad you have the manual hubs. The auto's don't always lock in unless you can move the truck far enough for them to engage.
just like johnsonswamp said "the tire" has to move far enough to engage when you have autos, manuals just lock-em in and go. never heard of a manual hub being distroyed ever. I have trashed several autos and been stranded in the woods (miles from the road and help) and will never go back. DAJF150, i have the same feeling as you said about being unlocked, i know they are unlocked when i turn them out. JMHO
good luck with whatever you decide.
I've seen two manual hubs malfunction, both on Broncos. I had a beater 86 and someone idiot of a PO actually BENT the passenger side TTB arm. The axle shaft rubbed against the opening in the arm, pushing the axle out of alignment. At the end of the axle, it was a 1/2" off center in the rotor. It chewed up the hub REAL quick in 4x4. I very nearly got stuck a LONG ways from help with that one. Scared me pretty bad.
The other is the 90 in my signature. The driver's side hub was permanently locked in. I didn't want to screw with it and had a set of milemarkers laying around so I switched them.
I don't see the problem with having the hubs locked(hubs only, not transfercase) when driving on the highway other than wear and loss of mpg. I have owned full time 4x4s (79 Blazer) and drove it on the h-way. Most modern 4x4s are locked hubs from the factory. As long as the drivetrain is well maitained(u-joints, diff fluid)there should be no problem. Please enlighten me as to why this is bad.
I see what you are saying, Alz. If the manual front hubs are locked-in, with the transfer case inside on 2-wd, then the only things connected or spinning are the hub assembley and the axle spline shaft into the front diff. The front transfer case and the front driveshaft into the diff. would not be rotating or connected. If I am correct.
This would probally be ok, but I still prefer to have none to less parasitic drag on all components for wear and mpg, as you have stated.
